Work Arrangement:   

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Global Technical Center three times per week, at minimum.

The Team:

This team is responsible for strategy development and tracking of GM’s total carbon footprint and our performance to science-based targets and carbon neutrality/ ISO Net Zero.  

Our team members are strategic thinkers that understand the complexities of scope 1, 2 and 3 globally. We work cross-functionally with many groups including finance, policy, manufacturing, and technology to align sustainable strategies with GM’s decarbonization targets. 

What You’ll Do:  

As a member of the Sustainable Workplaces team, the decarbonization intern will play a key role in supporting General Motors’ Science Based Targets and net zero goals. Within this role you will have exposure to complexities of reducing carbon emissions within Scope 1, 2, and 3 and the key areas that need additional focus to drive emission reductions. This role will allow you to help shape the carbon reduction strategies within General Motors in the key areas of supply chain, logistics, among others. As part of the role, you will:

  • Work with the Energy and Water Efficiency and Innovation team

  • Work with the Energy Strategy team

  • Work with teams outside of the Sustainable Workplaces organizations to collaborate cross-functionally to find innovative solutions for carbon reductions

  • Review data to determine areas of the business to focus emission reductions

  • Learn about emerging technologies that can promote carbon emission reduction

  • Apply learnings to lead a project based on interest and need to create a roadmap for carbon reductions

Required Qualifications:    

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas: Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability Science, Computer Science, Finance, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering
  • Must be graduating between December 2025 and May 2028
  • Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week

  • Past experience and/or understanding for the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and/or Science Based Targets
  • Past experience in project management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to impact complex subjects to a wider audience
  • Emerging partnership and collaboration skills and ability to learn from and share knowledge with co-workers in a fast-paced environment
  • High level of integrity, ability to deal with ambiguity, take initiative, and be self-directed

Start dates for this internship role are May & June of 2025.

Compensation:

  • The salary range for this role is $3,500-$4,900, dependent upon class status and degree
  • GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2025 Student Program
