Work Schedule: This is a casual position. Casual employees work on an ‘as needed’ basis to meet the needs of the business. Work days/hours will often vary from week to week.

Works as part of a team delivering care by assisting physicians and surgical team members during operative procedures.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions

Assists in maintaining a sterile field during surgical procedure through consistent application of aseptic technique, while under the supervision of a licensed RN.

  • Learns and follows policies and procedures for sterile technique.
  • Provides appropriate care specific to the age of the customer/patient to ensure understanding and comfort level of treatment, as outlined in the Age-Specific Criteria.
  • Includes data from the patient/significant other(s) in the assessment as appropriate.
  • Sets priorities for nursing action in a logical sequence according to patient's need following established physician's preference file and by direct communication with surgeon or anesthesiologist.
  • Provides teaching specific to the patient's health care problems.
  • Insures containers/specimens are labeled correctly.

Assists is performing scrub/circ duties in an accurate, concise and timely manner, while under the supervision of a licensed RN.

  • Preparation for case according to Physician Reference Card.
  • Handling of instruments.
  • Complies with specific hospital and department's policies concerning safety.
  • Complies with specific hospital policy and procedures concerning infection control.
  • Maintains a clean, neat and safe environment for patients and staff according to hospital and departmental policy.
  • Ensures that supplies and equipment necessary for patient care are stored in an organized and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrates accurate patient information documentation on Perioperative record according to policy.
  • Demonstrates neatness and legibility.
  • Performing counts.
  • Handling medications and/or specimens.
  • Maintaining instrument tables according to standard procedure.
  • Actively participates in the “tear down” and/or turnover of the room following a case.

Learns to readily identify location/secure supplies/equipment in the core, while under the supervision of a licensed RN.

  • Ability to set up cases and pulling supplies.
  • Ability to prioritize needs for cases and has all supplies needed for surgical cases prior to start of case.

Uses communication skills that (are intended to) achieve the desired outcome, be perceived as satisfying and acceptable by those involved, and/or promote team work, while under the supervision of a licensed RN.

Assists in initiating action in response to information indicating risk(s) to correct, prevent, and/or minimize risk to patient, employee, or hospital, while under the supervision of a licensed RN.

  • Demonstrates correct and safe technique in the use of equipment according to specific product information and policy and procedure manuals.
  • Follows appropriate procedure for obtaining and returning or cleaning/disposing of equipment and supplies.
  • Provides information to health care team and/or supervisors when necessary.
  • Charges accurately for use of supplies and equipment according to policy.
  • Performs scrubbing duties according to departmental policy.
  • Accurately performs all sponge, needle, and sharp counts at appropriate times according to department standards.
  • Demonstrates proper use of instruments, equipment, suturing, and stapling devices.
  • Saves and properly identifies all specimens according to department policy and procedure.
  • Prepares instrumentation according to physician PPFs and scheduled procedure.
  • Follow department policy for wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) during all procedures.
  • Provides for appropriate handling and labeling of all specimens, cultures, and blood draws according to department policy and procedure.
  • Transports patient to proper postop designation.
  • Using consent form, verbally confirms surgical team, patient identification, procedure, and right or left side = (time out).
  • Accepts additional nursing care assignments and performs under the direction of the surgeon.
  • Communicates to appropriate personnel regarding unresolved issues.

Sets/revise priorities appropriately, while under the supervision of a licensed RN.

  • Priorities based on urgency, availability of resources, patient/family request, other departments' demands/duties.

Maintains a professional behavior in attitudes, demeanor, and interactions to achieve organization's mission. (Quality Improvement, Image of Nursing, Interdisciplinary Relationships, Professional Development, Community, and the Healthcare Organization) while under the supervision of a licensed RN.

Job Requirements

Education

  • High school education or equivalency required.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited nursing program or an accredited surgical technology program and actively pursuing degree.


Experience

  • Prior experience in a healthcare setting preferred.


License/Certifications

  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire.


Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Knowledge of operating room processes and patient procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions and schedules.
  • Ability to read and communicate information clearly and completely.
