DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Inpatient department is a 24/7 department that provides care to pediatric and adult patients with acute and chronically ill conditions requiring standard and higher frequency of surveillance and intervention. Transitional care for patients who require skilled needs such as, intravenous antibiotic therapy, physical and occupational therapy, and wound care prior to discharge to home or to a lower level of care is also provided in this department.  Outpatient services include infusion therapy.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Nurse Manager Inpatient Services – Critical Access Hospital is responsible for Inpatient Services for St. Charles Health System – Critical Access Hospital and directs the delivery of professional nursing services for assigned units. This position is responsible for the overall planning, budgeting, staffing, performance, and operation of the department as well as performance and annual review of direct reports. This position directly manages caregivers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

Oversees the operations of assigned department to ensure smooth and efficient department operations and that resources are available in the assigned units 24/7. Collaborates with other staff members to facilitate provision of patient care. Ensures adequate departmental staffing to provide safe patient care through review of appropriate data, development, and maintenance of master schedules.

Acts as the department liaison to other hospital departments and outside entities. 

Responsible for resource management ensuring appropriate and sufficient equipment and supplies are available. Manages staffing and scheduling (control of master schedule; ETO & LOA approval; light duty scheduling) - delegates related clerical functions to other applicable staff.

Serves as a real-time resource and assists with clinical expertise for staff with problem-solving on patient care, processes, and family issues.  Serves as a representative for all customers.

Maintains ongoing communication with staff, department leadership, and others to ensure needs are being met for staff and patients. Engages medical staff for the operations of the department and key decisions.

Regularly meets with the medical staff and CNO to set clinical practice according to community standards and evidence-based practices and bridge the gap by coordinating with the Education department in holding continuing education programs, skills lab and ongoing evaluation of caregivers’ performance.

Communicates (both written and orally) effectively and maintains professional relationships with caregivers, medical staff, patients, guests, and other hospital departments.  Executes and provides two-way communication of the St. Charles Health System mission, vision, values, and strategic plan for the department (staff meetings, rounds, etc.)

Coordinates quality initiatives and process improvements.  Aligns and manages to St. Charles Health System metrics and quality initiatives. Oversees trending of quality and financial indicators. Regularly collaborates with the Quality Improvement Coordinator to implement evidence-based practices in achieving perfect core measure compliance, zero harm across the board and excellent overall patient care experience exceeding identified benchmarks.

Facilitates department meetings and shared governance/leadership efforts.

Responsible for budget development, regular monitoring, accountability and meeting all operational targets for all areas within span of control. Manage operations within the budget. Provides productivity oversight and review.  Works with leadership to achieve productivity standards.  Develops and implements annual plan including goals for unit with CNO. Controls and maintains position control including the addition and deletion of positions related to budget and human resource needs.

Hires, directs, coaches, and monitors the performance of all direct reports, to develop and maintain a high-performance team that meets organizational and department goals.  Responsible for performance and annual reviews of direct reports. Complies with Human Resource processes and controls.  Regularly collaborates with the CNO and the Recruitment Department to anticipate staffing and retention.

Monitors and ensure all direct reports are current with compliance and safety requirements. Implements and manages all organizational safety directives and goals.

EDUCATION

                   

Required:    Graduate of an accredited school of nursing .

BSN or Bachelor’s degree in related field. 

Preferred:  Master’s degree in nursing, management, or related field. 

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

Required: Current Oregon RN license.

AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification.

Ability to travel to business functions/trainings/meetings and all St. Charles Health System worksites.

Preferred:  ACLS, TNCC, PALS, Certification in area of specialty.

EXPERIENCE

Required:  5 years related experience. 1 year nursing leadership experience.     

Preferred:  Two years of Acute Care nursing leadership experience.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
