As part of Campus and Student Life at the University of Chicago, Student Wellness integrates multiple services related to care of the students’ health and well-being, including Medical care and Counseling. UChicago Student Wellness serves the student body as a primary care medical practice and includes general internal medicine, family practice, gynecology, sports medicine, travel medicine, and minor urgent care.


Job Summary
 

Reporting to the Senior Medical Director, the Director of Quality Management will lead and direct processes and overall quality improvement (QI) activities that produce better patient care and efficient operations. Specifically, will develop programs to review patient care and outcomes, implement strategy and plans for a quality improvement function within the medical facility in collaboration with the administrative and clinical leaders of Student Wellness (SW). Track and present results of improvement efforts and ongoing measures of clinical processes to leadership. Director of Quality Management will have primary responsibility for direction of Quality initiatives within the Medical unit, and will provide consultation, oversight and coordination of Quality initiatives across the other Student Wellness units, as needed. Additional area needs may be designated by the Medical Director or AVP of Student Wellness.

Practice change is to be guided by evidence-based guidelines from national clinical organizations including USPSTF, AAP/Bright Futures, ACOG, and AFP. Implementation is to be effected with evidence-based practices such as PDSA cycles to systematically implement and evaluate practice change. Ongoing monitoring will be guided by the elements of compliance laid out by AAAHC accreditation requirements.

The Director of Quality Management will utilize clinical decision-making tools and analytics from Point and Click to provide real-time and retrospective evaluations of practice change. The Director of Health Information Systems will be a key partner in utilizing the PNC resource effectively.

The Director of Quality Management will collaborate with clinician colleagues to gather input and systematically work towards clinical practice change initiatives. Developing ongoing Peer Review activities will be an ongoing focus to further QI Projects in line with AAAHC guidelines. The Director of Quality Management will also supervise and guide the QI related initiatives led by the RN for Quality Management ensuring maximum coordination and positive impact across the medical unit.

Outreach activities focusing on increasing access to healthcare services by underrepresented or marginalized groups, with respect to preventative, reproductive, sexual healthcare will be an area of focus for this position. This will be accomplished via practice changes within the clinic as well as outreach in collaboration with Health Promotion and our campus partners such as the Center for Identity+ Inclusion and the Deans of Students’ Offices.
The Director of Quality Management will serve as a consultant and advisor to the other SW units setting up various QI initiatives.

The Director of Quality Management will continue to fulfil their role as a physician within Student Wellness. Routine duties include providing primary and urgent care to students.

This is a 4-days a week, part-time, 12-month position.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and lead QI initiatives in the Medical Unit aligned with AAAHC guidelines.

  • Advise and coordinate QI initiatives across Student Wellness functional areas.  

  • Develop evidence based, rigorous processes and evaluation criteria to further student safety and improve clinical outcomes.

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data related to student health and well-being, identify trends, areas of improvement and opportunities for innovation.

  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) in the area of QI to inform decision making.

  • Implement evidence-based practices and benchmarks to streamline workflows, reduce inefficiencies, and improve overall student experience.

  • Remain current with best practices and innovations in the area. Adhere to best practices in the field of QI.

  • Collaborate with colleagues within SW and campus partners to receive input and drive meaningful change initiatives.

  • Perform comprehensive history and physical exams.

  • Make appropriate orders for diagnostic testing.

  • Conduct evidence-based diagnosis and management.

  • Prescribe appropriate medications and therapeutic interventions.

  • Adhere to professional guidelines and best practices including those created at University of Chicago Medicine.

  • Perform health maintenance and prevention.

  • Assess, manage and do appropriate referrals of students with mental health problems within the usual and customary scope of primary care.

  • Collaborate with, coach and supervise mid-level providers, with particular attention to Quality initiatives

  • Supervise and guide quality improvement initiatives lead by RN Quality Management clinician.

  • Complete office-based minor surgical procedures, including but not limited to suturing of lacerations and incision and drainage of abscesses.

  • Complete timely documentation and dictation of patient encounters; patient education in the context of primary care.

  • Participate in departmental and University activities as assigned.

  • Participation in off campus programs.

  • Formulates a plan of care and educational needs in collaboration with the patient, family, physician, nursing staff, and other members of the health care team.

  • Maintains patient records.

  • Performs necessary record-keeping, analysis, and reporting of clinical outcomes.

  • Assists the care team with patient counseling in adapting to, and coping with, their changing health status.

  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.

  • Interprets patient health problems and needs, develop and implement patient care plans, and maintain medical records.

  • Has a sold understanding of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: 

  • M.D. or D.O. from an accredited medical school.

  • Timely and complete satisfaction of disciplinary and State continuing education requirements.

Experience:

  • At least two years of primary care experience.

  • Experience working with a college age population.

Certifications:

  • Eligibility for a current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Illinois.

  • Completion of an accredited residency in a primary care specialty (Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics or Internal Medicine).

  • Board Certification in the appropriate primary care specialty.

  • DEA registration.

  • Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR.)

  • Maintenance of board certification and up-to-date medical skills.

Preferred Competencies 

  • General knowledge of the developmental and maturity challenges of adolescents and young adults.

  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of sensitivity in situations of confidentiality and discretion.

  • Qualified to have an appointment as a Clinical Associate in the Department of Medicine.
