Job Summary:

Location: Medical Office Building - MWH
Address: 717 N 190th Plz. - Elkhorn, NE
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Accountable for the delivery of quality care to patients and families according to the individualized needs of the patient.

Procedure nurses must have ability to demonstrate knowledge of basic sterile technique by ensuring all instruments, equipment, and supplies are available for in-office procedures. Must be able to demonstrate attention to detail to ensure physician preferences are met when scrubbed in or circulating in cases. Procedure nurses should be able to exhibit assessment and reassessment skills in order to maintain patient safety. This includes but is not limited to the patient's stability pre-procedure, the patient's tolerance of procedures, evaluation of pain both intra-operatively and post-operatively, provides support and relaxation intra-operatively, evaluation of patient's response to medications, and follow-up assessment of patient's pain and infection status. Must be able to communicate clearly with all members of the healthcare team. Must be willing to learn all principles of infection control to maintain care of equipment and supplies post procedure.

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions

1. Provides appropriate care specific to the age of the customer/patient, to ensure understanding and comfort level of treatment as outlined in the Population Specific Criteria.

  • Demonstrates ability to identify opportunities for and give individualized customer service/patient care according to customer/patient needs.

2. Performs an initial and ongoing assessment to determine the patient's needs.

  • Includes data from the patient/significant other(s) in the assessment as appropriate.
  • Prioritizes data collection according to patient's immediate needs.
  • Triages emergency and all other patient calls to determine patient needs by making detailed inquiries of patient history, notifying physician and treating according to physician's orders 100% of the time.
  • Prepares patient for physician exam by assessing symptoms, weighing patient, checking vital signs, obtaining relevant information pertinent to patient needs, documenting all information/procedures and reviewing patients medical record 95% of time when applicable.

3. Develops/reviews/revises and individualizes the plan of care to address the patient's nursing care needs for optimum patient care outcomes. (Consultation and resources, nurses as teachers.)

  • Collaborates with providers and other clinical disciplines as appropriate.
  • Provides teaching specific to the patient.
  • Care plan reflects continuing care needs and/or referrals.
  • At the direction of the physician, provides patient and family education regarding proper use of medication, medical equipment and health/illness prevention to ensure adequate knowledge/awareness and recommending appropriate community resources 95% of the time.

4. Implements interventions that are consistent with the established plan of care in a safe and appropriate manner (Professional Models of Care).

  • Is familiar with, and follows, nursing protocols and standards of care.
  • Uses current knowledge in nursing practice based on standards and research literature.

5. Performs technical skills competently and independently to assure patient safety (autonomy).

  • Able to competently perform technical skills independently.
  • Is accountable to learn new skills and equipment within areas' specifications and time frame.
  • Demonstrates correct and safe technique in the use of equipment according to specific product information and policy and procedure manuals.
  • Follows appropriate procedure for obtaining and returning or cleaning/disposing of equipment and supplies.
  • Administers medications according to physician orders to ensure patient health care by injection, inhalation, oral or intravenous methods 100% of the time.
  • Performs diagnostic testing under direction of physicians to obtain relevant information pertinent to the patient needs 95% of the time.  Start, maintain and discontinue Intravenous (IV )infusions.
  • Performs phlebotomy to obtain specimens according to standardized procedures 95% of the time.

6. Maintains a professional behavior in attitude, demeanor, interactions to achieve organization's mission. (Quality Improvement, Image of Nursing, Interdisciplinary Relationships, Professional Development, community and the healthcare organization.)

  • Communicates effectively to solve problems at the personal and unit level.
  • Is approachable and professional in working with other health professionals, ancillary staff, patients and family.
  • Takes pride in the unit by active participation in restocking and maintaining a clean environment.
  • Maintains a professional appearance, behavior, and work environment.
  • Maintains competence in area of experience.
  • Participates in meetings and/or committees as needed to assist in decisions effecting area/unit or organization.
  • Greets, directs and assists patients to ensure proper care, by inquiring and facilitating patient care in a prompt and polite manner 99% of the time.

7. Initiates action to correct, prevent, and/or minimize risk(s) to the patient, family or staff/employees. (Quality of Care).

  • Completes appropriate report form for a risk (e.g., variance/incident report, patient concern report, maintenance request).
  • Communicates to appropriate personnel regarding unresolved issues.
  • Works within the scope of practice as defined by Nurse Practice Act.
  • Provides appropriate follow-up care to coordinate patient needs by following department specific guidelines 95% of the time. Includes but not limited to, following policy and procedure for post-procedure patients, post partum patients and fetal loss patients.
  • Maintains work areas to ensure healthy environmental conditions by cleaning and organizing equipment and rooms 95% of the time.

8. Assists physician with various procedures to facilitate patient care by preparing and monitoring patient, readying, supplies, medications, equipment and assisting according to physician instructions 99% of time. Procedures include, but not limited to, colposcopy, loop electrocautery excision procedure (LEEP), hysterosalpingogram (HSG), Hysteroscopy, endometrial ablation, coaptite, cystoscopy, Intravenous (IV) administration, medication administration via IV, Intramuscular (IM), sub-q, inhalation or oral routes, suturing, administer breathing treatments, mole removal, biopsies and assisting with other diagnostic test or procedures.

9. Fiscally accountable.

  • Acts professionally responsible for human and other resources.
  • Charges accurately for use of supplies and equipment according to policy.

Job Requirements

Education

  • Successful completion of annual mandatory education requirements.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (RN) required.


Experience

  • Three to five years previous experience in a clinical nursing unit with preference in Labor & Delivery or in patient/out patient surgery or plastic surgery or pediatric experience for consideration in the pediatric department.


License/Certifications

  • Current valid license, valid compact multi-state license, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure required for work state.
    • Registered Nurse (RN) License
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire.
  • Certification(s) in area of specialty preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification for the pediatric department required within 6 months of hire.


Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate and interact with patients, family members, hospital personnel, and co-workers.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to learn, retain, and utilize computer skills that are required for department and hospital information system.
  • Ability to think critically and problem solve.
  • Ability to demonstrate attention to detail, assessment skills, knowledge of basic sterile technique, utilization of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and perform Intravenous (IV) therapy.
  • Willingness to learn all principles of infection control.
  • Well-versed in all aspects of clinic nursing including but not limited to phone triage, emergency preparedness, Intravenous (I.V.) infusions, and coverage of providers.
  • Ability to identify emergency scenarios and institutes corrective actions in a calm and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrate a calm demeanor, thorough assessment, and empathy in handling situation of fetal loss and in evaluating postpartum patients.
  • Able to perform IV therapy including insertion, aseptic technique, care of the site/dressing of the site, and use of the pump.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office in order to report data collection of in-office procedures and chart audits.
