Job Description

We are looking for a Nurse Practitioner (NP) who can assist with medical examinations for NREL Occupational Health Services (OHS). The NP will work as a team member within OHS. OHS provides a variety of occupational medicine related services to employees, including medical surveillance, periodic exams for select employee populations, return to work evaluations, international and domestic travel clinic review, and work-related injury acute care.

Clinical responsibilities will include:

  • Occupational Medical Surveillance Exams

o Unbound Nano Worker baseline medical exams

o Respirator User Medical Clearance

o Hearing Conservation Medical Surveillance

o Employee Exit examination

  • Fitness for Duty Exams and Consultations

o Return to work consultations

o DOT medical certifications

  • Work Exposures

o Work related injury and illness care, Colorado Workers Compensation management

o Toxic exposure medical consultation, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and follow up care management

o Employee Reproductive Health consultation

  • Personal medical issue consultation and first aid

Minimum Job Requirements- Must have the ability and willingness to:

  • Conduct initial and periodic reviews of worker medical and work history, laboratory findings, clinical findings, and physical assessments to facilitate fitness for duty evaluations, and to assist in preventative measures and maintenance of worker health and safety.
  • Determine appropriate treatment plans for worker health problems for both occupational and non-occupational visits. Determine if occupational health case management is needed to accomplish a reduction of injury severity, symptomatic relief, and to lessen lost time and workers’ compensation costs.
  • Conduct diagnostic and screening procedures to include spirometry, audiometry, physical assessment as indicated to support medical surveillance and work-related injury/illness.
  • Document in OHS electronic recordkeeping systems. Maintain requirements for confidentiality and protection of personally identifiable information (PII) as specified by applicable DOE and other regulations, standards, and policies.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of governing regulations, applicable standards, and best practices guidelines, including, but not limited to the Department of Energy (DOE) 10 CFR Part 851, Appendix A, Part 8 – Occupational Medicine, DOE directives, and DOE EFCOG Medical Group best practices recommendations; OSHA occupational medicine surveillance regulations, Department of Transportation (DoT) medical clearance assessment requirements, State of Colorado rules pertaining to occupational health and workers’ compensation, and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and NIOSH guidelines. Identify, interpret, and communicate applicable regulations and standards subject matter to the SOMD and the EHSQ Office management for incorporation into NREL procedures and practices.
  • Interface knowledgably and with colleagues in ESHQ, Facilities and Operations and Research.
  • Wear personal protective equipment to enter research areas; must be able to lift at least 30 pounds, must be able to walk at least ½ mile, ascend/descend stairs.
  • Use a variety of MS Office products, electronic health record software, and other electronic applications.
  • Travel for training classes, conferences, etc.
  • Able to use computer-controlled equipment for medical procedures.
  • Have technical writing skills incorporating excellent grammar and style requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required within the OHS program.

Basic Qualifications

Masters Degree in accredited nurse practitioner school and 1 year of clinical nurse practitioner experience. Colorado Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license; active Colorado Prescriptive Authority (RXN) preferred but not required.

Additional Required Qualifications

Education, Licensure, Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and/or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DPN) degree in advanced practice nursing
  • National NP Board Certification
  • Licensed, or license eligible, as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the State of Colorado. Must be in good standing and maintain license throughout the duration of employment.
  • 1 or more years recent experience providing Nurse Practitioner services to a diverse primary care or occupational medicine population.

Certifications Required, or be willing to obtain:

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • NIOSH-approved Spirometry Training Course Certification
  • Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC) Certified Occupation Hearing Conservationist (COHC)
  • Colorado Workers Compensation Level I Certification, preferred.
  • Occupational Health Nursing Certification or willingness to obtain certification

  • Experience with physical assessment in a workplace setting
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety principles and practices

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Professional IV / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
