Department Summary

In Infectious Disease Research and Early Development, we are engaged in designing molecular diagnostic tests for infectious diseases, working on early product concepts, novel technologies and critical research questions in the field. 

We are seeking a highly motivated intern to join our team. The intern will work closely with researchers in our department. They will apply microbiology, molecular and computational biology concepts to analyze pathogen-specific biomarkers and contribute to the development of novel approaches in the molecular diagnostics field. The intern will also have the opportunity to interact with other departments and learn about clinical applications of infectious disease diagnostics.

This internship position is located in Pleasanton, on site.  

The Opportunity

  • Analyze genomic and metagenomic datasets using bioinformatics tools and pipelines

  • Apply microbiology, computational biology and ecology knowledge to study sequence-based pathogen/disease specific biomarkers

  • Present to internal research teams and other stakeholders

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer) 

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are

Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).
  • Must have attained a Master's Degree.
  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
  • Must have attained a PhD.

Required Majors: Currently enrolled or recent graduate in microbiology, computational biology or a relevant field (e.g. bioinformatics, microbial ecology, infectious diseases, engineering)

Required Skills: 

  • Research experience in microbiology, infectious disease, microbial ecology, molecular evolution, disease ecology or related fields

  • Strong background in computational biology and bioinformatics

  • Demonstrated programming skills, ideally in Python including data analysis packages such as pandas and jupyter notebooks

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience in a molecular biology wet-lab environment

  • Familiarity with experimental methods such as PCR 

  • Familiarity with structured biological databases

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of  California is $45 -$50 hourly.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
