Job Description
Job purpose:
GSK Japan is searching for a Manager, Medical Science Liaison (MSL) within Medical Affairs to support the hepatology therapeutic area. This individual will be responsible for leading MSLs in achieving excellence in scientific engagement, ensuring good governance and competency, and for delivering to customer and business needs as appropriate.
GSK has a growing Hepatology pipeline portfolio and is in the process of preparing for multiple launches in distinct liver diseases. The ideal MSL Manager has strong knowledge across liver diseases and will lead and inspire a team of MSLs to hold robust discussions on science and data with external experts in the field, while collecting valuable medical insights in support of medicine strategy and the execution of asset-related tactics. Through gaining deep understanding of our science, MSLs help support appropriate use of our medicines in patients and identify data gaps to inform future data generation needs. Through in-field scientific engagement with healthcare providers and external experts, the MSL fosters a more educated healthcare environment by:
1. Communicating their deep knowledge of GSK data in the context of overall patient care to ensure evidence-based understanding of the science behind GSK medicines
2. Gathering valuable insights on GSK products and services, and on medical and scientific information to better understand patient needs and evidence gaps
Key responsibilities of the MSL Manager:
- Lead, manage, coach, and develop the hepatology MSL team to help deliver the GSK mission and to ensure achievement of company objectives.
- Provide authoritative opinion on medical and ethical matters to support the MSL team and other colleagues across GSK, enabling the evidence-based use of GSK medicines and compliance with the relevant Japan policy and regulatory requirements
- Take ownership to ensure the MSLs develop and deliver the Medical Affairs Plan, including key data generation and scientific engagement
- Monitor the performance of the MSL team in delivery of these plans and performance metrics as per the Medical Affairs Dashboard and individual performance plans
- Help identify data gaps and key barriers to treatment pathway optimization and appropriate medicine use
- Ensure that the MSL team provides strategic medical input into Clinical Development and Medical Affairs activities
- Line Manager to MSLs, providing strategic direction, knowledge support, and individual performance and development management
- Collaborate with other internal cross-functional groups
- Identify and address MSL training and development requirements
- Provide oversight of MSL activities and implement an effective control framework to assure excellence in Medical Affairs governance and compliance. Identify and manage issues according to risk management practices, including raising issues to governance boards
- Work with Medical Affairs Leadership to ensure consistency in MSL ways of working across the business
- Maintain current knowledge in diseases and relevant therapies in hepatology

Basic Qualification
- Scientific/medical background and relevant degrees with at least 3-5 years Pharmaceutical or Biotech industry experience required.
- Previous experience managing and developing direct reports is desirable.
- Mastery of customer engagement - proven customer interface experience with demonstrated ability to manage relationships with External Experts.
- Proven track record of collaborating with Medical, Commercial, and other internal stakeholders
- Experience in navigating ambiguity and multiple stakeholders within large teams.
- Able to travel a significant portion of time.
- Proven communication skills using various mediums, as well as strength in negotiation and influencing skills.
- Knowledge of regulations governing information provision to customers within the Japan pharmaceutical industry.
- Strong business and financial acumen.
- Strong strategic thinking skills at the therapeutic level.
- Must possess a good understanding of the Japan healthcare marketplace
Education/certification/Language
- Higher degree in life sciences: PhD, MSc or equivalent
AND/OR - Other professional healthcare provision qualification with experience (e.g. nurse practitioner, physician, surgeon, physiotherapist or pharmacist)
AND/OR - A significant (e.g. 3 years) amount of pharmaceutical industry experience in a role successfully engaging in scientific exchange with external experts.

- Bilingualism in Japanese/English (business proficiency)
