Under general supervision and in accordance with the policies, procedures and guidelines established within the organization, the Operating Room (OR) Support Manager oversees the day to day unit operations related to staff  identified to support the operations of perioperative services   The Operating Room Support Manager acts as a role model, mentor and resource to staff to ensure that all standards are maintained and to encourage a team environment. The OR Support Manager assists with managing variability as it relates to workload, acuity, staffing and patient flow. He/She is responsible for communication amongst the team, coordination of education and will assist as a resource person for the overall operations of the Operating Room. The OR Support Manager serves as a contact for internal and external customers. He/She reports to the Director of Nursing. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science - Required

  • Minimum of two years clinical experience in the OR or Respiratory preferred

  • BLS required upon employment; ACLS and PALS required within 6 months

  • Laser Safety Officer training required within 6 months

  • Responsible for point of care testing equipment and education

  • Basic PC computer skills to operate the database and office programs used in the department; can be acquired after hire

  • Must demonstrate excellent human relation skills to manage patients, physicians and staff in difficult and/or sensitive situations.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required to build a sense of teamwork and to maintain positive relationships within the department and across the organization

  • Must be customer service oriented

  • Must demonstrate leadership skills including flexibility, good organizational skills, problem solving abilities, the ability to work independently and take initiative within established procedures and guidelines

  • Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT less than 20 percent of the time. Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.

Operating Room Manager Duties

  • Oversees the daily operations of the support staff in the OR to ensure efficient flow, responding to staff and physician questions and providing direct patient care.

  • Manages staff scheduling requests and modifications on a day to day basis, adjusting staffing based on patient volume and productivity goals. May be needed to fill in as staff and/or take weekend/night shift call.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to providing outstanding customer service to all customers in a manner reflective of our mission and values.

  • Communicates in a positive, professional manner to the staff and physicians.

  • Promotes strong working relationships with physicians, vendors and other departments.

  • Addresses and immediate internal or external customer concerns, providing follow up and keeping the manager informed.

  • Serves as a department resource and liaison to other departments.

  • Acts as the first resource for coaching and direction of staff to ensure efficient daily operations.

  • Functions as an extension of the manager, ensuring all procedures are performed in compliance with regulatory guidelines.

  • Promotes and ensures a safe and courteous workplace for all patients, families, visitors, physicians  and peers.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Performs as the expert in Anesthesia Equipment

  • Coordinate new product requests to include research, gathering feedback from KA, meet with sales reps, new product paperwork, cost analysis

  • Coordinate and/or perform education of OR staff, KA personnel

  • Trouble shoot all anesthesia equipment including monitors, anesthesia machines, glidescopes, fiberoptic scopes, ultrasound machines and pumps including: IV, epidural, peripheral nerve block, syringe pumps

  • Assist anesthesia personnel with set up and completion of pediatric and adult MRI cases; pediatric patients put to sleep in OR, assist with transport to MRI and from MRI to PACU

  • Assists with transport of critical care patients to and from OR suite

  • Coordinates appropriate placement and acts as the expert with operation of various types of anesthesia machines

  • Oversee assistive personnel with cart, anesthesia workroom, anesthesia machine resupply

  • Hemodynamic monitoring line setup, provide insertion assistance, educate OR, KA staff

SSA Job Duties

  • Duties may include the performance of basic technical skills not requiring license, such as, but not limited to: Operating Room (OR) cleaning and reset for next case; Gathering equipment, case carts, and positioning aides for the next case; Holding extremity for surgical prep; Stocking of OR rooms, sub sterile, and specialty carts; Help with positioning patient for spinal anesthesia and surgery; Assist in patient transfers from OR bed to patient bed; Trauma room, Cardiac room, and Neuro room set up.

  • Answers signal lights, pages, to assist nursing staff with patient needs.

  • Transports patients to and from the OR

  • Assists nursing staff in OR as needed with opening of supplies or holding for preps

  • Assists in the positioning of patients under direction of RN

  • Cleaning OR rooms and transporting supplies and equipment

  • Maintains a clean and orderly environment, ensuring patient safety and comfort at all times

  • Stocks rooms, scrub sinks, and sub sterile

  • Clean and maintain all storage rooms

  • Change linen on patient bed

  • Assumes responsibility for own growth and development; attends regular staff meeting

  • Communicates in a timely manner with RN regarding equipment/supply needs

  • Provides skilled technical care according to unit specific and generic structure standards, protocols, and procedures.

  • Manages incoming tubes from tube station and deliver meds or other items to the RN

Anesthesia Tech job duties:

  • Work which produces levels of mental/visual fatigue which are typical of jobs that perform a wide variety of duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines. Work may include the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time.
    Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.

  • Provides information, direction, and assistance as appropriate to persons entering the unit.

  • Obtains information with Cisco phone texting system. Answers signal lights, pages to assist nursing staff with patient needs.

  • Assists nursing staff if OR as needed with obtaining ordered medication from automatic medication dispensing system to facilitate patient care.

  • Transports patients

  • Assists with technical skills for setting up equipment

  • Assists with cleaning of anesthesia machines, sets up ambu bag and suction

  • Assists other staff in cleaning OR rooms and transporting supplies and equipment.

  • Lifting, pushing, pulling or assisting with positioning for anesthesia procedures (nerve blocks).

  • Takes and records demographic information as needed.

  • Provides skilled technical care according to unit-specific and generic structure standards, protocols and procedures, prescribed medical interventions, and nursing guidelines.

  • Maintains a clean and orderly environment, ensuring patient safety and comfort at all times

  • Accurately documents all care given

  • Assumes responsibility for own growth and development; attends staff regular staff meeting

Staff Assistant Job Duties:

• Maintains and updates departmental records and files for staffing the surgery department
• Maintains and updates departmental schedules and payroll on a daily basis while adhering to staffing and scheduling policies.
• Communicates with each unit to determine staffing needs at the beginning of each shift.
• Uses critical thinking skills and data obtained to determine placement of staff.
• Troubleshoots problem areas of need and contacts extra staff on short notice as needed.
• Requisitions regularly used office supplies and small equipment repair and maintenance services. Ensures that adequate supplies needed for smooth office operation are available.
• Operates a variety of office equipment, PC, calculators, fax machines, photocopy machines, etc.
• Develops and maintains spreadsheets and databases to input, maintain and retrieve data, track statistics, monitor activities and to provide regular and recurring reports, i.e., monthly unit P.I. reports and supplemental staffing reports.
• Maintains departmental or management calendar. Schedules and/or reschedules appointments, and advises staff or manager of schedule changes/modifications.
• Receives and directs or escorts patients and visitors; places, receives, and directs phone calls; takes and transmits messages. Provides information to callers, or refers them to others.
• In addition to the above general secretarial and clerical duties, performs specific functions unique to the individual department or unit, such as processing patient charges, preparing and distributing worksheets and other materials, inputting production and other operational data, processing payroll transactions, transcribing patient test results, and coordinating educational functions.

Inventory Coordinator Duties:

• Mechanically inclined and trained in basic troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment
used in surgery
• Able to read and interpret data from equipment and computers.
• Must be able to manage several job tasks simultaneously and be able to function effectively under stressful situations.
• Ability to control confidentiality of sensitive information necessary.
• Must have the ability to provide positive customer service.

• Troubleshoots problems with equipment, coordinates preventative maintenance and repair of equipment, and cleans specified equipment.
• Coordinates repair of equipment with clinical equipment maintenance, maintenance department, and/or company representative.
• Coordinates maintenance of anesthesia machines on routine schedule.
• Troubleshoots any malfunctioning equipment.
• Participates in negotiating preventative maintenance and repair service contracts.
• Teaches others preventative maintenance and troubleshooting techniques for equipment and resources staff with equipment related issues.
• Communicates equipment-related information to appropriate people and documents important information.
• Communicates with clinical equipment maintenance for safety checks on all new equipment.
• Establishes and organizes log for equipment control, preventative maintenance and cleaning schedule.
• Develops and provides positive work environment and the overall team effort.

Ancillary duties to include:

  • Coordination of flow between OR and Out of OR spaces (cath lab, IR, MRI, CT and NIL)

  • Support with point of care equipment, staff education and competencies.
