2025 Summer Intern - Proteomic & Genomic Technologies

Department Summary

The PGT(Proteomic & Genomic Technologies) department in gRED develops and implements cutting-edge proteomic technologies and computational algorithms to fuel therapeutic target and drug discovery through impactful collaboration across gRED. Our statistics group in Computational Proteomics in PGT uses state-of-the-art data analysis methods for mass spectrometry-based proteomics experiments to address crucial biological questions. 


This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.  

The Opportunity

The candidate will assist in evaluating and improving the quality control of DIA (Data-Independent Acquisition) data for mass spectrometry-based proteomics. This position provides the opportunity to work with data processing tool output across various mass spectrometry instruments and to significantly impact on ensuring consistent and reliable data across multiple large-scale research projects. The intern will play a key role in:

  • Defining and testing metrics and strategy for quality control in large-scale DIA experiments to ensure consistent and reliable data across multiple research projects.

  • Developing a prototype tool to automate the generation of QC metrics, which is critical for our department due to our reliance on DIA experiments and increasingly sensitive MS instruments.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2025.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are (Required) 

Required Education

You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student)

  • Must have attained a Master's Degree

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)

Required Majors: Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Data Science or a related field.

Required Skills: 

  • Proficiency with R and Python.

  • Experience with visualization tools such as ggplot2 R packages, R shiny, plotly, or Matplotlib Python package, etc.

  • Experience with machine learning algorithms.

  • Experience in processing and integrating large omics data (genomics, proteomics, or metabolomics).

  • Team-oriented focus and the ability to work independently.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Prior experience with DIA proteomics data is a plus.

  • Prior experience with software engineering and documentation is a plus.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
