2025 Summer Intern – BioMolecular Research Department - Bioinformatics

Department Summary

BioMolecular Research (BMR) focuses on developing, managing and providing diverse biomolecules, by employing advanced techniques in molecular biology, expression and production with support from automation and informatics tools, to advance innovative research and drug discovery. This internship role would work with product owners and scientists to identify requirements for automated processing of SDS Page gel images including cropping gel images, processing the gel image and applying algorithms to calculate protein expression based on gel’s content.JOB IS FROM: nursingjobs.siteVIEW

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

The successful candidate will explore approaches to enhance gel image analysis of target protein expression. Activities carried out during this internship will include:

  • Communicating with scientists in the BioMolecular Research (BMR) department to identify ways to properly process raw SDS Page gel images.

  • Gathering requirements from scientists, product owners, assessing the problem and proposing solutions will be some of the key outcomes of this internship.

  • Evaluating different parameters to enable automated SDS Page gel image cropping and processing gel images to calculate and predict protein expression yields.

  • Compiling experimental data, analyzing and presenting results at department meetings and at the 2025 Intern Poster Day.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in  May/June 2025.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are (Required) 

Required Education

You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a Master's degree (enrolled student)

  • Must have attained a Master's Degree

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)

Required Majors: Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Data Science or a related field.

Required Skills: 

  • Practical knowledge of Python programming and common Python libraries used in Image file processing (OpenCV, Pillow/PIL, Sickit-Image, SciPy).

  • Knowledge of statistical principles, linear algebra, and regression analysis.

  • Self-starter with an agile mindset & hands-on mentality who navigates and takes advantage of ambiguity to seek the most effective and sustainable outcomes.

  • Process-oriented with strong analytical skills, strategic thinking, and creative problem-solving capabilities.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience in Bioinformatics or Data Sciences preferred.

  • Familiarity with recombinant protein expression, purification and automation is desirable.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
