Department Summary

As part of the translational research group in the Department of Oncology Bioinformatics, our team leverages multiomic datasets from ongoing oncology clinical trials to investigate therapy responses, resistance, and mechanisms of action. Our aim is to translate these findings back to the bench, thereby informing and advancing novel tumor drug development. We hope to drive and expedite groundbreaking therapeutic development by applying cutting-edge computational approaches across the early research development lifecycle.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • Analyze single cell RNA-seq dataset to characterize tumor microenvironment in relation to clinical outcomes of cancer patients, especially hematological cancer patients. 

  • Implement computational methods for cell population annotation, cell-cell communication modeling, and gene regulatory network analysis to uncover key mechanisms underlying tumor biology and therapeutic impact.

  • Work closely with interdisciplinary teams to align bioinformatics research with clinical and pharmaceutical objectives.

  • Translate findings into actionable insights for drug development, targeting tumor biology and the immune landscape.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer) 

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. 

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Who You Are (Required) 

Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
  • Must have attained a PhD.

Required Majors: Major in Genomics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Computer Science, Genetics, Statistics, Biomedical Engineering.

Required Skills: 

  • Proficient in coding with R or Python.

  • Previous experience working with genomic data, especially single-cell data, is highly desirable.

  • Deep Knowledge of cancer biology and/or cancer immunology is highly desirable.

  • Previous experience working in an HPC/cloud environment is highly desirable.

  • Deep knowledge of statistical principles, linear algebra, and regression analysis is highly desirable.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal abilities.

  • Proficient in reviewing and analyzing scientific literature.

  • Skilled in time management, including task organization, prioritization, and meeting deadlines.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of  California is $45-$50 hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
