2025 Summer Intern – Discovery Chemistry

Department Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a talented intern to join our Small-Molecule Drug Discovery Chemistry Department at Genentech in South San Francisco, CA, and gain insights into our state-of-the-art drug discovery operations. The successful candidate will work closely with our scientists in Discovery Chemistry to contribute to a drug discovery research project through the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel small molecules and DNA-small molecule conjugates.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

• Plan, execute and analyze chemical reactions towards the synthesis of target molecules.

• Perform data acquisition, analysis and reaction optimization independently.

• Plan routes and perform literature searches independently.

• Participate in team meetings and communicate results in a team setting.

Program Highlights

• Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

• A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are (Required) 

Required Education

You meet one of the following criteria:

• Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student)

• Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program)

• Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student)

• Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)

Required majors: Chemistry, Biochemistry.

Required skills: 

• Must have a general understanding of safe laboratory practices and be able to follow laboratory protocols and procedures involving hazardous chemicals.

• Self-driven, motivated, and driven by scientific curiosity.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

• Synthetic organic chemistry research experience (academia or industry) is preferred, including experience with analytical techniques such as NMR and LCMS.

• Experience using chemistry search engines such as Scifinder or Reaxys is preferred.

• Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills with an innovative spirit.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $25.00- $45.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
