This position will be expected to train to charge nurse.
- 0.60 FTE (48 hours per 2-week pay period).
- 8 and 12-hour Evening/Night shifts; Every 3rd Weekend.
- MNA Union; Benefit eligible.
This 16-bed unit cares for surgical patients (ex: total joints, fractures, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, bowel resections, gynecology procedures, urological procedures, amputations) and medical patients (ex: COPD, CHF, sepsis, UTI, respiratory failure, chest pain, pneumonia, seizure, pancreatitis, bowel obstruction) including the occasional pediatric patient. The average length of stay is 2.7 days. The nurse patient ratio is 1:3 on days and evenings; 1:5 or 6 on nights. The care model on Med Surg is mainly primary nursing with some team nursing (RN/LPN model); no nursing assistants or techs. The unit utilizes bedside barcode scanning for medications and specimens, Omnicell technology for medication distribution and medication storage, have bedside vital sign machine monitors in each room that data validate into Excellian (EMR). All beds have bed exit alarms and scales in them for easy weighing of patients. Several rooms are camera monitored for increased safety. Their nurse call system interfaces with lights in the hallways, receivers at the nursing station, and optional phones carried by nursing staff. The unit culture has been described as a strong team of nurses that enjoy working together and feel like a family. There are many opportunities to cross train to other units to provide increased opportunities for learning. Patient safety, process improvement, and education are priorities with several nursing staff on committees. The skill mix on the unit includes senior nurses and new grads starting their careers. In terms of unique attributes – New Ulm Medical Center has a hospitalist program 24/7 so the provider and nursing staff work closely together to care for the patient; extensive tele-health support for specialists such as Cardiology, Neurology, Infectious Disease, Psychiatry, Intensivist, and more to come; all rooms are private. NUMC has won several awards for excellence in care. Finally, there are no special teams for skills, so whole person care and the following skills are essential: peripheral IV starts, NG insertion, foley insertion, chest tube monitoring, and EMR documentation.
Job Description:
Nursing is the assessment and treatment of human response to actual or potential health problems. This includes establishing an intentional therapeutic relationship between a registered nurse and a patient and family. As a leader and the integrator of care, the professional nurse has the responsibility, authority, and accountability for planning, coordinating and evaluating the patient’s care needs.
Practices primarily on hospital units and care for patients that are acutely ill across a wide variety of medical issues and support recovery from surgery.
Principle Responsibilities
- Comprehensive assessment of patient and family needs; identification of outcomes based on needs assessment; establishing the plan of care; supervising the progress; and modification of the plan of care as needed.
- Maintains education and competencies to remain proficient to provide high quality patient care practice and skills.
- Incorporates evidence-based nursing practice taking into consideration current statutes, rules and regulations when developing the plan of care.
- Establishes, in the collaboration with the family and patient, realistic and measurable patient expected outcomes based on nursing diagnoses, patients present and potential capabilities, goals, available resources and plan for continuity of care.
- Identifies outcomes that are age appropriate, culturally appropriate, realistic and attainable.
- Coordinates, collaborates, and delegates appropriately to ensure care is provided in a safe, effective fashion.
- Fulfills all organizational requirements.

Required Qualifications
- Associate's or Vocational degree

Licenses/Certifications
- Licensed Registered Nurse – MN Board of Nursing required if working in state of MN upon hire
- Must meet at least ONE of the requirements below:
◦ Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association
◦ Current BLS certification from the American Red Cross
◦ Allina in-house BLS training (within 30 days of hire) - Certified Medical Surgical RN (CMSRN) preferred
