Department Summary

Clinical Pharmacology is a dynamic function that plays a critical role in supporting drug development teams and in optimizing the dosing regimen for patients. Utilizing our expertise in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics,  Clinical Pharmacologists contribute at every stage of development, applying quantitative pharmacology principles across a molecule's life-cycle for both small molecules, biologics, and novel treatment modalities. The Clinical Pharmacology department is instrumental in shaping future treatments and ensuring they are both safe and effective.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, CA.  

The Opportunity

The modeling and simulation (M&S) group within clinical pharmacology is seeking a highly motivated graduate student interested in developing visual large language model (VLLM) tools for drug development applications. The intern will work with Machine Learning and Quantitative Systems Pharmacology (QSP) scientists to leverage (VLLMs) to streamline the extraction of information from scientific literature for updating QSP models. The key steps include constructing and expanding a knowledge graph (KG) with key entities and relationships, and deriving mathematical formulations for the rates within the KG.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are (Required) 

Required Education:

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors:

  • Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, and applied mathematics are preferred or relevant fields.

Required Skills: 

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with Python programming
  • Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills with high attention to detail.
  • Strong Machine Learning background

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Visual Large Language Models

  • Familiarity with knowledge graphs and ordinary differential equations is a plus.

  • Software engineering skills

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 


The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $40-$55 hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
