CAUCUS OVERVIEW
Founded in 2019, the Oregon Legislature’s Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Caucus is a bicameral body of state legislators committed to its mission of advancing racial equity initiatives and eliminating systemic oppression and racism across the state. The BIPOC Caucus envisions an Oregon that is racially diverse, dynamic, just, and equitable.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The BIPOC Caucus is seeking a Communications Intern to assist in the development and amplification of caucus communications, particularly as it relates to the BIPOC Caucus Agenda. This is an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain experience in communications and advocacy work at the state level. The Communications Intern reports to the BIPOC Caucus Policy Analyst.
The Communications Intern will work 10-15 hours per week and is expected to work in the Capitol building during the legislative session. The number of hours is negotiable depending on the intern’s schedule and caucus needs.
This internship will begin in January 2025, and is limited in duration through June 2025.
The BIPOC Caucus values lived experience and the ability to connect legislative work with community priorities across the state, especially among communities of color that have been historically excluded from the legislative process.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Pitch and create content for social media channels
- Coordinate with legislative staff to develop communication strategies for caucus priorities
- Draft press releases, statements, action alerts, and other communications
- Support communications for legislative events such as floor votes, press conferences, etc.
- Attend meetings and events to stay current on issues and actions
- Track media coverage of issues pertaining to the BIPOC Caucus
- Assist with other duties or projects as assigned by the BIPOC Caucus Policy Analyst

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
At least 16 years old and enrolled in high school or equivalent alternative prior to commencement of internship; OR • Enrolled in an accredited college, trade school, university or other qualifying educational institution; OR • Graduated within the past year from either high school, equivalent alternative, accredited college, trade school, university, or other qualifying education institution.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:
- Over the next two years, the Capitol Building will be undergoing extensive renovation and construction projects which may limit accessibility to employees. This will require Legislative employees to work both from home and within the building as the construction project dictates. While working from home, personal, stable and high-speed internet access will be required to perform the functions of this position. There may be occasions that require employees scheduled to be working from home, to report to the Capitol or an offsite building. Every effort will be made to provide reasonable notice. However, employees may be required to report to the building under short notice. The Capitol building is located at 900 Court Street NE, Salem, OR 97301.
