Job Description
Argument mining is a subfield of computational linguistics that is used to identify rhetorical structures in many different document types (see e.g. [1] and references therein). This proposal is a research investigation to make the works of Aristotle and other classical philosophers on ethics ‘AI-ready’ and use them to identify arguments and fallacies in scientific text. It would entail identifying a set of fallacies and classical argument structures and then attempt to identify them in text, e.g. what type of metaphor is used? Is this argument against man-made climate change an argument Ad Hominem, or an Ignoratio Elenchi (Red Herring)?
JOB IS FROM: nursingjobs.siteVIEWThis work would help jumpstart efforts to explore argument mining techniques, that can support work on trust markers tools and argument detection that we can utilize in our products. Also, it establishes us as a ‘trusted source for trust markers’ and shows that we are involved and invested in ‘Trust in Research’. The work will consist of two parts:
1. Develop a machine-readable taxonomy of fallacies, based on classical works on ethics and rhetoric and allow it to be AI accessible. There is work done by the group of Chris Reed in Dundee that we can take as a starting point.
2. Develop a tool that allows the user to run a research paper against this classical argumentation corpus to allow identification of arguments and match against argument type. Argument mining is an interesting field of AI, this would allow us to gain experience in this field.
