2025 Summer Intern - US Policy & Evidence (External Affairs)

Department Summary

Public Affairs & Access is a multi-disciplinary organization that includes Channel & Contract Management; Corporate Communications; Policy, Evidence & Access Strategy; and External Affairs. Our mission is to drive positive change in the healthcare system so that every patient can access our science. We lead the development of meaningful partnerships, forward-looking pricing, contracting and distribution strategies, and proactive policy solutions that advance a more equitable and hopeful future for all of those who need our therapies.

Within the External Affairs department, US Policy and Evidence (USPE) is seeking a summer intern to provide support on key projects related to federal and state health policy priorities. The intern will also be encouraged to gain cross-functional experience across Public Affairs & Access to better understand how we leverage our communications, market access, government affairs, and externally-facing capabilities to drive impact for our patients, our people, and our communities where we live and work. Interns will have peer-to-peer support, networking opportunities, and career development opportunities with other interns in Public Affairs & Access as well as throughout Genentech. 

This internship position is located in Washington, DC - On site

The Opportunity

US Policy and Evidence is looking for an intern to support the team’s work in the analysis and development of policy solutions to improve affordability and equitable access for patients, support a more sustainable market-based system, and advance business objectives. Interns can expect to:

  • Analyze federal and state policy proposals for business impact and draft related memos;

  • Support the development of proactive policy solutions to improve patient access to innovative medicines;

  • Support government affairs and advocacy team projects, events, and other activities, as needed;

  • Collaborate with cross-functional business teams to better understand business operations and the impact to the business of policy proposals;

  • Develop valuable skills, network, gain exposure to policymaking and advocacy.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. 

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

  • Must be able to work Washington DC.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education

You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing or have attained an Associate's Degree.

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program).

  • Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must have attained a Master's Degree.

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

  • Must have attained a PhD.

Preferred Majors: All majors considered; demonstrated interest in healthcare issues and policy preferred

Required Skills: 

  • Strong analytical, writing, interpersonal, attention-to-detail, and communication skills

  • Interest in health policy, legislation, and government affairs (through coursework, personal experience, volunteer work, or other activities)

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to multitask and work independently

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Washington, DC is $20-$43 hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
