2025 Summer Intern - Human Genetics
Department Summary
The Human Genetics Department leverages insights from the human genome to identify and validate candidate biomarkers, understand disease etiology, and discover novel drug targets for clinically relevant conditions. We are seeking a talented and highly motivated intern to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will work on analyzing hundreds of thousands of samples from biobank-scale datasets (such as UK Biobank, All Of Us, Omnigen Discover Me South Africa) with an end goal of bringing together a wide range of data types linked to comprehensive phenotypic data to advance target discovery and prioritization.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.
The Opportunity
You will have the opportunity to access and analyze biobank-scale datasets (e.g., UK Biobank, All of Us, and other biobanks) that will help address questions of importance for human health and disease.
Your work will support the human genetics team and the broader Genentech community in leveraging genetic and clinically derived real-world-data to design, implement, and perform genetic analyses that help in target discovery and safety assessment.
You will have the opportunity to advance the use of human genetics and genomics data for shaping the future of precision medicine.
This position combines computational work with opportunities to work on key disease areas through highly collaborative projects.
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week), paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June 2025.
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are (Required)
Required Education
Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)
Required Majors: Bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, genetic epidemiology, or similar discipline.
Required Skills:
Proficient experience in programming with R or Python.
Solid knowledge of command line interface (Bash).
Demonstrated experience in the design, quality control, and performing association analyses for common and rare variants in whole exome sequencing (WES) and whole genome sequencing (WGS) datasets.
Proficient in software engineering practices, including version control using Git and executing parallel computing workflows (e.g., Slurm batch jobs).
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
Experience working with biobank data (examples such as UK Biobank, FinnGen, All of Us).
Experience working with Electronic Health Records (EHR) or other Real World Data (RWD).
Experience working with workflow management systems such as WDL, Snakemake, or other relevant workflow management language.
Excellent communication, collaboration, writing, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to create detailed documentation of work completed as well as analyses performed.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
