The SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) unit at Cleveland Clinic is staffed by nurses who are specially trained to care for individuals of all ages who have experienced or witnessed any type of violence. This violence may include sexual assault, child abuse, interpersonal violence, elder abuse, or human trafficking.
A caregiver in this position works varying shifts from 3:00am – 3:00pm or3:
Prior Sane RN experience required along with one year of RN experience.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Provide timely and accurate clinical assessment, care, intervention and documentation for patients that have been sexually assaulted, a victim of child abuse, elder abuse, interpersonal violence (IPV) or assault.
Provide, as a service to the patient, forensic evidence collection and/or forensic photography as requested and will maintain chain of custody for such evidence.
Develop a safety plan before patient's discharge, providing resources for follow up medical care and referrals for post care support services to the patient.
Collaborate with medical and nursing staff, law enforcement, prosecutors, protective services, advocates and other agencies and entities as needed.
Participate in an on-call schedule, as determined by SANE coordinator and respond to the designated facility within one hour.
Complete clinical experiences as determined by the SANE course and coordinator (e.g., Civilian observer with Cleveland Police or Cleveland Sex Crimes, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, Domestic Violence/Child Advocacy Center, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Family Justice Center (Cleveland), and Courtroom trial experience).
Perform speculum exams and/or pediatric assessments under the supervision of a LIP.
Utilize thorough knowledge of anatomy and body structures and mechanisms and patterns of injury.
Utilize a thorough knowledge on collecting and managing forensic evidence with a Sexual Assault Exam Collection (SAEC) kit and a Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault kit (DFSA).
Travel to other Cleveland Clinic Facilities as needed.
Attend continuing education as a sexual assault nurse.
Participate in 75% of staff meetings and attend and complete annual SANE competency.
Utilize clear and concise written documentation skills and articulate clearly.
Use a camera to provide photo documentation of injuries and/or evidence.
Provide court testimony as needed.
Participate in community awareness programs and professional organizations.
Utilize current knowledge base regarding legislation and government programs and best practice standards of care.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Complete an IAFN approved SANE Adolescent/Adult course within 60 days of hire.
Complete an IAFN approved SANE Pediatric course within 1 year of hire for incumbents hired after April 1, 2018.
Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA).
Current state licensure as Registered Nurse (RN).
One year of recent experience as an RN.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing).
Trauma, Women’s Health, or Pediatric experience

Physical Requirements:
Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
Note: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Gloves, Masks, Gowns as needed.
