About the Role:
Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: NBIX) is offering the opportunity to gain Computer-Aided Drug Discovery experience in the world of biotechnology. Our intern program offers exposure to Physics-Based Modeling/Cheminformatics. The Computational Chemistry team has a strong reputation in the industry for Computer-Aided Drug Discovery and employs state-of-the-art computing infrastructure to offer more efficient and faster throughput in drug discovery research._
Your Contributions (include, but are not limited to):
Supporting a range of activities, including applying Computational Chemistry software (e.g. Amber, RDKit, Scikit-Learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Maestro) to develop physics-based/Insilco models and supporting medicinal chemists in understanding SAR and building hypotheses
Track 1 Physics-Based Modeling:
Applying protein structure knowledge and programming skills to identify unknown small molecule binding site(s)
Setting up advanced molecular dynamics simulations (e.g. cosolvent simulations) and performing comprehensive analyses to understand protein-ligand interactions
Track 2 Cheminformatics
The candidate will have the opportunity to construct AI/Machine Learning models from in-house data, for various assay end points
The candidate will also be involved in creating SAR workflows using state-of-the-art methods/algorithms to help scientists identify underlying data trends and use the findings in the design of new compounds in drug discovery projects
Interacting with chemistry and biology teams within the company
Collaborating with a mentor team of cross-functional team members as well as the other interns in the class
Completing a special project and presenting the recommendations to senior management upon completion
Requirements:
Pursuing a graduate degree with an interest in Computational Chemistry/Computational Biology
Specific degree or field required: Computational Chemistry, Data Science, Computational Biology, Physical Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, or similar
Comfortable with at least one programming language
Prior experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry would be an asset but is not required
Familiarity with Physical and Life Sciences is desirable
Good verbal and written communication skills
Ability to think creatively and be a team player
Offer flexibility with a willingness to work on multiple projects simultaneously
Bring to the Company a skill set complementary to its technology and therapeutics
Interest in attending various program events, including social gatherings, career development workshops, and more
Ability to commit to a 10-week, full-time summer program
Student must be on site in San Diego, CA for the duration of the internship
