About the Role:
Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: NBIX) is offering the opportunity to gain research experience in Medicinal Chemistry at our laboratories. Our intern program offers exposure to the chemistry behind our efforts at discovering new compounds and advancing them within our pipeline. This role offers the participant both theoretical principles about medicinal chemistry as well as important practical aspects such as automation and synthesis._
Your Contributions (include, but are not limited to):
Synthesizing novel chemical intermediates and final compounds
Reviewing the chemical literature to obtain procedures, guide reaction sequences
Setting up, monitoring by TLC and/or LCMS, and working-up reactions
Purifying compounds by automated chromatography (ISCO combi-flash or ACCQprep) or recrystallization
Learning about and applying medicinal chemistry and CNS-drug discovery principles to drug discovery projects
Generating and interpreting biological data
Helping develop plans to address medicinal chemistry goals
Maintaining a complete laboratory notebook
Interacting with other chemists and pharmacologists within the company
Completing a special project and present the recommendations to management upon completion
Requirements:
Candidate must be enrolled in a graduate degree program in one of the following areas: Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry
Practical experience with organic synthesis, methods development, total synthesis, or similar
Ability to work in a laboratory environment
Prior laboratory experience (Minimum>1 year)
Good verbal and written communication skills
Ability to think creatively and be a team player
Interest in attending various program events, including social gatherings, career development workshops, and more
Ability to commit to a 10-12 week full-time summer program
