Job Description

Position Summary

The School of Health Professions at National University is seeking applications for an Associate Professor position in the BSN program at our San Diego campus. The rank will be based on the candidate's qualifications and experience. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching and scholarship in their field, as well as a strong commitment to supporting the university’s diverse adult student population and promoting student success.

This is an on-campus position that may require travel to clinical sites. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with other faculty members and administrators to develop and implement strategies that enhance program quality, student engagement, and overall success. We are particularly looking for candidates with experience in curriculum development and teaching courses in Medical-Surgical Nursing, Mental Health, or Women’s Health, as well as supervising clinical experiences at the San Diego campus.


Essential Functions:
Teaching

  • Provide exceptional student experience, from initial contact to degree completion and engagement for nursing students.
  • Preparation of curricula and development and implementation of courses, student advising and feedback.
    Provide consistent, timely, quality, substantive, constructive feedback to students.
  • Comply with published grading criteria, procedures, and deadlines.
  • Assign quality coursework and examinations in alignment with course outline in a timely manner.
  • Maintain office hours onsite to champion student success.
  • Respond to student contact within 24-48 hours.
  • Work with the curriculum committee for course updates and development of delivery modalities for adult learners. Recommend suitable instructional material, textbooks, and library acquisitions.

  • · Teach courses and clinical rotations as assigned by the Academic Director of Nursing or Assistant Director of Nursing per policy.
  • ·Support flexible and convenient courses and programs for lifelong learners.
  • Provide consistent, timely, quality, substantive, constructive feedback to students.
  • Course shell preparation in advance (welcome letters, videos, announcements, AI, adding supplemental content, communicate days and times of live session meetings, etc.).
  • Complete applicable assignment and learning outcome rubrics.
  • Appropriate documentation of student issues and intervention (preserve emails threads, notes in feedback, complete forms when required).
  • Timely notify students of any changes in course schedules, additional materials, or live class sessions dates and times.
  • Communicate with students using University-designated systems and through university-assigned email accounts.
  • Re-engage a student who is not actively participating in the course.
  • · Collaborate with student resource personnel in a timely manner to support individual student success.
  • · Collaborate with clinical faculty to identify learning or skills needs to promote student success.
  • Embrace differences in race, gender, age, ability, and geography into our academic fabric and appreciate those differences as drivers of change.

Scholarship

  • National University recognizes the importance of faculty research and scholarship in maintaining currency in the discipline.
  • The department faculty will develop research and scholarship criteria in consultation with their Department Chair / Associate Dean.
  • Faculty will describe their plans for research and scholarly activities in their FAP and report progress in their Annual Review (AR).
  • Engage in scholarly activities to maintain professional growth.
  • Participate in professional development as outlined in faculty policies.

Service

  • Participate in curriculum oversight, shared governance, and the student experience.
  • Serve on committees at the program, department, school, college or/and university level and engage in community activities that promote program outreach and university goals.
  • Participate in program meetings and advisory boards to integrate best practices and strategic initiatives.Professional activities in local, national, or global community, outside of the University.
  • Participate in commencement exercises and other important University events.
  • Provide Faculty Annual Plan (FAP) annually to the Chair.
  • Participate in faculty governance and perform administrative responsibilities as assigned.
  • Complete all trainings as assigned (faculty development, required compliance trainings, etc.)
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • An unencumbered nursing license in the State of California is required.
  • Terminal degree (DNP, Ph.D., EdD) in nursing or in a discipline that is recognized within the field as related, required.
  • A minimum of 5 years full-time faculty experience in higher education required.
  • Direct patient care experience within the previous five (5) years in the nursing area assigned, which can be met by (required):
    • One (1) year's continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse in the designated nursing area; or
    • One (1) academic year of registered nurse level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent that demonstrates clinical competency; and
    • Completion of at least one (1) years’ experience teaching courses related to registered nursing or completion of a post-baccalaureate course which includes practice in teaching registered nursing.
  • Experience in teaching in a Competency-Based Curriculum preferred.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service required.
  • Knowledge of Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) standards preferred.

Special conditions of employment include:

  • Background check required.
  • Travel is required at least once annually to attend the annual Commencement ceremony (if held onsite).

Compensation Range:

Annual Salary: $80,031.00 - $101,985.00

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies.  Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position.
