BOSTON MEDICAL CENTER- Ambulatory Family Medicine Permanant Charge NurseThe position is an Outpatient Family Medicine Nurse Manager within a large Academic Medical Center in the Boston area. The Ambulatory Family Medicine Service sees a total of approximately 27,000 visits a year. It is a progressive practice that has plans for expansion and transformation.
Family Medicine provides preventative and urgent care to children, adolescents, and adults utilizing the patient-centered medical home model. A team-based approach is emphasized.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Charge Nurse is directly responsible to the Nurse Director. He/she is responsible for patient flow and general coordination of unit activities including the direction of nursing personnel during that assigned shift, and may also provide direct patient care as needed. The charge nurse utilizes clinical expertise, expert leadership, decision making, systems thinking and exceptional interpersonal communication skills to achieve the smooth flow of patients through the department from admission to disposition, while facilitating the delivery of high quality professional nursing care.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES:
Assumes clinical responsibilities for limited number of patients. Assess unit needs as related to staff, supplies and equipment. Communicates routinely with nursing and operations management- Operations manager, administrative Director- on all assessment findings management- Operations manager, administrative Director- on all assessment findings Supports the Nursing Director with supervision of nurses, scheduling and timecards or other delegated activities for the department Communicates issues with clinical/Operational leadership particularly as they relate to flow and/or personnel Maintains effective relationship with all departments like MA’s ASR’s, phlebotomy etc. through effective communication. Assists in development and monitoring of quality assurance projects. Provides input into the annual performance review of staff including hiring and performance improvement Assists with the orientation of newer staff as it relates to the overall daily operations of the department.
CLINICAL PRACTICE:
Consistently uses clear, concise, and effective written and oral communication and complies with departmental policies when sharing/documenting relevant patient care data.
Delivers care in a manner that preserves/protects patient autonomy, dignity, confidentiality, and rights.
Role models practice that is in compliance with established practice standards, policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, statutes and regulations (e.g., DPH, JCAHO, Fire Code, OSHA, DEA, etc.).
Effectively assigns and delegates appropriate patient care activities to co-workers with appropriate knowledge and skill level. Holds co-workers accountable for completing assigned/delegated tasks in a timely manner.
In emergency/crisis situations, demonstrates effective decision making, re-prioritizes patient care needs, initiates appropriate response actions, and directs other team members to ensure a complete and coordinated response.
Coordinates and directs others in the provision of care and collaborates with health team members/department to ensure appropriate resource utilization for all patients
Reviews staffs work and assures that work is completed properly and in a timely manner.
In the absence of the nurse director, assumes responsibility for clinical and administrative support to staff, patients, and families.
Conducts investigation of employee incidents- RL-6 involving clinical practice issues, and provides information to the Nurse Director. Recommends corrective action.
Contributes to employee performance appraisals.
Works cooperatively and constructively with all departments and health care team members to establish an environment that supports the process of collaboration.
Systematically evaluates the quality, cost, and effectiveness of nursing practice.
Uses the results of patient satisfaction-NRC, quality improvement and/or research data to initiate changes in practice. Collaborates with operations leadership on this
Acts in a professional manner relative to practice standards, statutes, and regulations.
Takes appropriate steps to effectively resolve peer conflicts or investigate questionable activities. Discusses such with individuals involved and seeks assistance from nurse director/operations manager when appropriate.
Maintains a presentable appearance in accordance with dress code requirements including wearing a visible identification badge
To maintain clinical competence in appropriate practice area, participates in ongoing educational activities to enhance clinical knowledge and update requisite skills.
Independently identifies need for in-service/educational sessions and seeks experience to meet such needs and to maintain clinical skills.
Completes the following mandatory requirements: annual BLS certification, institutional mandatory education, e.g., safety regulations, infection control standards, etc., and departmental/unit specific competencies.
Actively participates on unit or departmental based task forces, councils, or committees.
Provides peers with constructive feedback regarding their practice and professional skills.
Acts as a resource for new employees, float staff, and other unit team members.
Assists in the orientation and/or acts as preceptor for new employees and/or nursing students.
Acts as a patient advocate in order to facilitate meeting identified patient needs.
Delivers care in a non-judgmental and nondiscriminatory manner that is sensitive to and demonstrates respect for patient diversity.
Orientation and Continuing Education
Plans and implements orientation program for nursing department employees based on current nursing research and clinical practice standards.
Performs systematic follow-up procedure with all new hires to ensure competency in basic nursing skills and adequate integration into their particular clinical role.
Conducts investigation of probationary employee incidents and recommends corrective disciplinary action.
Evaluates probationary employee’s clinical performance and makes recommendations.
Conducts formal and informal staff education programs for new and continuing employees related to new products, equipment, practice standards, relevant research, and/or quality improvement findings.
Develops and implements annual competency program.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Nursing degree: Diploma, ASN or BSN (preferred), Ability to obtain BSN within 4 years
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Registration and current RN licensure in the state of MA in good standing required.
Requires current basic life support (BLS) certification. PALS optional
CPR certification required.
EXPERIENCE:
At least 2 years of nursing charge nurse leadership experience preferred
Strength in collaboration and implementing motivation and teams
Clinical knowledge of pediatrics or specialty areas
Must have outpatient nursing experience
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
One to two years’ experience in the department.
Good interpersonal skills.
Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access, enters, and interpret computerized data/information. EPIC preferred
Effective interpersonal skills to facilitate communication with various members of the health care team, patients, and families.
Analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues and conduct quality improvement research utilization projects.
Ability to effectively delegate appropriate patient care activities.
Effective verbal and written communication skills appropriate to the patient populations served.
Physical ability to meet the core job responsibilities in accordance with practice setting demands for the patient populations regularly served.
Ability to effectively manage stress due to critical issues related to patient care, changing organizational climate and personnel issues.
