Position Summary

The primary role of the Nursing Retention and Remediation Specialist is to assist students to achieve high outcomes in academic performance, licensure pass rates, and student satisfaction with course, instructors, program, and the campus in the undergraduate nursing program. Engages students in early identification, intervention, remediation and other evidenced based coaching strategies for improved retention, progression, academic success, and NCLEX success. The Specialist assists the student in the utilization of structured resources and processes.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Able to analyze student data in order to identify strengths and weaknesses of students within assigned courses in the nursing program.

  • Ability to utilize and integrate testing resources to promote understanding of course content and increase overall student performance.

  • Able to create methods of integrating strategies to increase test taking skills, study skills and note taking skills to increase course performance.

  • Demonstrates the ability to identify students at risk through data tracking platforms and develops interventions to address identified challenges to core course success.

  • Knowledgeable about individual and group teaching techniques.

  • Knowledgeable about National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) RN test plan and priorities for examination preparation.

  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively with students of various backgrounds and educational levels and provide remedial tutorial assistance, as needed.

  • Able to manage multiple ongoing student services at one time.

  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively with the students regarding issues identified by Nursing Faculty.

  • Demonstrates professional demeanor and positive, encouraging attitude while working with nursing students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for delivering and maintaining a comprehensive academic action plan for students at risk and develops strategies to improve testing performance.

  • Establishes specific remediation goals and objectives, conducts remediation workshops and tutorials, and develops methods to enhance student performance

  • Supports students learning through workshops, remediation sessions, group tutorials, and one-on-one meetings to improve course performance.

  • Collaborates with faculty to identify students at risk for persistence issues and develops action plans to address their needs.

  • Initiates and maintains communication with students at risk to provide effective and consistent support during core courses.

  • Participates in student focused engagement activities to promote the Nursing Academic Success Program.

  • Attends all meetings as required to enhance communication and collaboration with-in the nursing program.

  • Communicates clearly and effectively with Nursing Faculty to help plan remediation and tutoring services that best fit each individual students’ needs.

  • Provides a summary report of required student services to the campus Chair and Dean.

  • Maintains confidentiality in communicating with students and faculty regarding personal matters impacting student success in nursing.

  • Completes required Dallas College Professional Development training hours per academic year.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Normal physical job functions performed within a standard office environment.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to individuals with physical challenges to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s in Science of Nursing (MSN) required with two (2) years or more experience in clinical practice as a Registered Nurse (RN).

  • Registered Nurse License to practice in Texas. Current State RN license and CPR certification required.

  • Experience as Nursing Remediation Specialist preferred.

  • Excellent written, oral, and teaching skill.

  • Official transcripts will be required.

  • Bilingual preferred.
