In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Pharmacy Services duties: Delivers pharmaceuticals. Includes professionals who are trained and sometimes licensed to dispense medicine/controlled substances. An organizational related support or service (administrative or clerical) role or a role that focuses on support of daily business activities (e.g., technical, clinical, non-clinical) operating in a “hands on” environment.  The majority of time is spent in the delivery of support services or activities, typically under supervision. An entry level role that typically requires little to no prior knowledge or experience, work is routine or follows standard procedures, work is closely supervised, and communicates information that requires little explanation or interpretation.

Job Overview 

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, this position performs pharmacy-related functions in compliance with the department’s policies and procedures in order to provide optimal pharmaceutical care.  The Pharmacy Intern is responsible for providing pharmacy services, including, but not limited to distributing pharmaceuticals, performing inventory control, providing customer service, and maintaining pharmacy records. Pharmacy Intern job duties may vary depending on the area an individual is assigned to work.

HOURS:

It’s every other weekend 2-10:30pm both Saturday and Sunday. Training in March (midweek & weekend days to train) then for a rotation of every other weekend starting 3/29 & 3/30.

Job Description 

Minimum Qualifications: 

1. Enrolled in an APCE accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program.

2. Massachusetts Pharmacy Intern Licensure.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list.  Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned. 

1. Picks, delivers, and refills medication for automated dispensing machines.

2. Delivers bulk medications and IV solutions to the nursing units.

3. Conducts inspections of medication rooms in patient care areas.

4. Monitors refrigerator temperatures.

5. Assists with transport of schedule II – V controlled substances.

6. Requests and accepts prescriptions from a prescriber or prescriber’s agent.

7. Assists patients with prescription intake and over-the-counter sales.

8. Compounds sterile and/or non-sterile products.

9. Assists with medication reconciliation for admitted patients.

10. Returns expired or discontinued medications to the pharmacy

11. Triages phone calls and requests to the appropriate pharmacy staff member.

12. Maintains collaborative relationship with peers and colleagues to effectively achievement department goals, and to help foster a positive work environment.

Physical Requirements:  

1. Ability to walk and stand 90% of the day and to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs. 

2. Frequent reaching and grasping below, at, and above shoulder level. 

3. Pushing and/or pushing non-motorized equipment (e.g. carts, IV rolling rack, and medication rolling racks, etc.) weighing 40 to 60 lbs. 

4. Regularly grasping and fine manipulation with hands.

5. Works in an area with some discomfort due to dust, dirt, and temperature changes.

6. Possibility of cuts from broken glass and some exposure to hazardous chemicals.

7. Performance of duties that involve no potential exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.

Skills & Abilities: 

1. Ability to read automated dispensing reports regularly.
