The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University (AU) is currently seeking a faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, to serve as the Director of Assurance in Medicine (AIM) Program (administrative post), who will oversee and manage a comprehensive early assurance pathway program designed to support Georgia junior and senior college students as they prepare for medical school at MCG. The program will offer a multi-faceted approach to developing participants' academic and clinical competencies, with a focus on strengthening their scientific knowledge foundation, critical reasoning skills, and professional identity formation. The Director will be responsible for overseeing two four-week summer experiences, conducting quarterly virtual educational/professional development meetings, coordinating clinical experiences for participants in their local areas, and ensuring that participants receive ongoing guidance throughout their pre-medical journey. In addition, the Director will play a critical role in recruiting participants, mentoring them through MCAT preparation, and tracking longitudinal outcomes once they matriculate into medical school. This position is part of the MCG Office of Admissions and reports directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Admissions. This position does not meet the requirements to be on a tenure track.

Responsibilities

Program development and Implementation (70%)
  1. Program Development and Implementation:
    • Design and manage the two four-week summer programs, ensuring they offer rigorous MCAT preparation, clinical exposure, and professional development activities aimed at fostering early professional identity formation.
    • Develop a comprehensive curriculum that strengthens participants' scientific knowledge foundation in areas critical for the MCAT, such as biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology, while also enhancing their critical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
    • Create engaging, interactive learning opportunities to enhance participants' academic and clinical readiness for medical school, including lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities.
    • Organize and facilitate a minimum of quarterly virtual meetings, incorporating MCAT preparation sessions, guest speakers, peer networking, and career development workshops.
    • Coordinate additional programming through MCG's academic and career advisors
    • Coordinate programming for AIM with SEEP and pre-matriculation as offered through the MCG Student Support (may be need for shared resources)
    • Coordinate with pre-matriculation program for any needs related to AIM students entering pre-matriculation
  2. Student Support and Mentorship:
    • Provide ongoing, individualized academic counseling and support to program participants, helping them develop effective study strategies, set realistic goals, and stay on track with their MCAT preparation and academic progress.
    • Offer mentorship focused on the development of professional identity, guiding students as they navigate their path toward medical school and explore topics such as ethical considerations in medicine, healthcare disparities, and personal growth.
    • Provide coaching and emotional support throughout the program to help students overcome challenges, develop resilience, and strengthen their commitment to pursuing a career in medicine.
    • Track and monitor participants' progress, offering feedback and intervention strategies when needed to help ensure their success in completing the program and preparing for medical school.
    • Provide tailored support and encouragement to students from underserved backgrounds, fostering a supportive environment that values different perspectives in medicine.
    • Collaborate with MCG academic/career advisors and learning specialists dedicated to AIM
  3. Clinical Experience Coordination (10%):
    • Develop and maintain relationships with local hospitals, clinics, and healthcare organizations to provide a wide variety of meaningful clinical exposure opportunities that allow participants to observe healthcare professionals in a variety of settings.
    • Coordinate logistics for clinical opportunities, and volunteer activities, ensuring that students have the necessary resources, supervision, and support during their clinical experiences.
  4. Recruitment and Program Growth (10%):
    • Lead the recruitment efforts for the program, collaborating with designated colleges, universities, and community organizations to attract a strong pool of applicants, with a particular focus on individuals from underserved backgrounds.
    • Conduct outreach and engagement activities, including information sessions, webinars, and career fairs, to inform students about the program and its benefits.
    • Develop and implement strategies to build a strong, sustainable pipeline of future medical school applicants who are well-prepared for both the MCAT exam and the medical school admissions process.
    • Travel twice annually to all partner undergraduate institutions, and more as needed
    • Coordinate with the Senior Associate Dean for Admissions regarding recruitment goals and program materials.
  5. Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Work closely with the Senior Associate Dean for Admissions, faculty, and academic departments to align the Pathways Program with institutional goals and ensure participants are prepared for the rigors of medical school.
    • Collaborate with faculty and healthcare professionals to ensure the clinical experiences align with program objectives and offer an appropriate representation of real-world insights into the practice of medicine.
    • Build relationships with healthcare organizations, community partners, and alumni to enhance the program's resources and expand mentorship opportunities for students.
    • Collaborate with the MCG 3+ Primary Care Pathway Program for clinical experiences and possible early linkage for AIM students into the Primary Care Pathway.
    • Collaborate with MCG's Offices of Student Affairs and Student Support to provide an early link for AIM students to MCG student support services and student organizations.
    • Collaborate with MCG SEEP program

Program Data Management/Oversight (25%)
  1. Tracking Longitudinal Outcomes:
    • Track and assess the longitudinal outcomes of program participants after they matriculate into medical school, including their academic success, retention rates, USMLE pass rate and Step Scores, match rates, specialty choice and future practice locations.
    • Maintain communication with program alumni to gather insights about their experiences and to offer continued mentorship and support throughout their medical education.
    • Analyze outcome data to continuously improve the program, ensuring that it meets the evolving needs of students and fosters long-term success in medical school admissions.
    • Provide regular updates to the Senior Associate Dean for Admissions and annual reports for MCG leadership.
  2. Program Evaluation and Continuous Improvement:
    • Conduct regular assessments of the program's effectiveness, using feedback from students, faculty, and clinical mentors to refine and enhance program offerings.
    • Utilize data on program outcomes to demonstrate the program's impact and to guide future programmatic improvements.
    • Report on program success and impact, including success rates in MCAT preparation, MCG acceptance rates, MCG longitudinal outcomes post matriculation (see #5 above) and student satisfaction, to key stakeholders.
  3. Administrative and Budget Oversight:
    • Manage the program's budget, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and in line with institutional policies.
    • Oversee scheduling, staffing, and logistical operations related to both the summer programs and virtual meetings.

Required Qualifications

Doctoral degree in Education, Counseling, Educational Psychology, Psychology, Higher Education, Healthcare, Public Health, Biological Sciences, or related fields required.

Assistant Professor- Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training.

Associate Professor- Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:

- Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;

- Evidence of ability as a teacher;

- Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;

- Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,

- Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.

Assistant Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
