What Your Job Will Be Like:
Department 5371 seeks a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer to participate in the research, development, troubleshooting, field testing, production and delivery of advanced RF/Microwave Special Communications Systems. The systems we build are utilized in high impact, high consequence national security applications. The focus of this position will be to conduct mechanical design and analysis of highly integrated electro-mechanical components and systems.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Initiate, design, develop, execute, and evaluate new processes, products, or systems for implementing and integrating engineering solutions.
- Produce designs, models, and product definition of complex objects.
- Determine product requirements based on user needs.
- Use CAD application software to develop mechanical design concepts integral to RF electronics and systems.
- Create the design definition documentation utilizing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) ensuring that the design can be effectively manufactured and inspected.
- Evaluate design options using optimization techniques.
- Specify materials, equipment, and supplies required to complete product development and may evaluate vendor capabilities to provide required products or services.
- Establish and reviews design methods and procedures and prepares design specifications, analyses, and recommendations for presentation and approval.
- Develop and provide the necessary design documentation to enable our various industry and government production partners to produce the components.
Our systems are based on advanced signaling techniques and ultra-low power RF receiver/transmitter designs. The successful candidate will become part of a multi-discipline, success oriented, high-performance project team delivering systems that impact our National Security. Projects range from fast paced requests in response to real-world driven needs, to longer term, life-critical efforts with rigorous development requirements.

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and experience defined by the following parameters:
- An Associate’s degree in a relevant discipline plus four (4) years of directly related relevant work experience; or
- A High School Diploma plus eight (8) years of directly related relevant work experience.*
- An Active DOE Q clearance or Active DoD TS clearance is required in order to start this position.
*Equivalent education and experience must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
Qualifications We Desire:
The ideal R&D Mechanical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).¿
- Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex.¿
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

- Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Experience with mechanical design and fabrication, from development to production
- CREO and/or Solid Works proficiency
- Experience using configuration management tools

About Our Team:
The Embedded Signal Processors Department (5371) develops and delivers innovative and specialized Communications systems that require the highest reliability and performance and are used broadly in high-consequence national security applications. Our diverse team specializes in RF communication system design, RF circuit design, and reconfigurable digital signal processing. Most product development includes architecture, design and thorough testing of subsystem level components, along with supporting higher level system integration. Our design challenges include development of highly miniaturized electronics, creation of power efficient transceivers, signal extraction in very low signal-to-noise environments, and signal analysis of RF and communication systems.

Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
