Job Description

Lead the future of cloud storage at AWS Glacier, where we're solving unprecedented challenges in large-scale distributed systems. As a Senior Software Development Engineer, you'll architect and drive the development of one of the world's largest and most cost-effective storage services, achieving 99.999999999% durability while pushing the boundaries of storage efficiency.


Key job responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers, providing technical guidance and career development
- Drive architectural decisions for next-generation storage systems and services
- Design and implement distributed systems that operate at AWS scale
- Develop and optimize storage solutions that balance durability, cost, and performance
- Own the end-to-end delivery of major features and systems
- Collaborate with product and service teams to define technical strategy
- Drive operational excellence through monitoring, automation, and continuous improvement
- Participate in design reviews and help establish best practices
- Build and maintain high-performance, low-latency services that process petabytes of data
- Champion and implement security best practices across all systems


A day in the life
Your typical day might include:
- Leading design discussions for new storage optimization features
- Mentoring engineers on distributed systems best practices
- Reviewing and providing feedback on technical designs and code
- Working with product managers to define technical roadmaps
- Implementing core components of our storage systems
- Analyzing system performance and planning improvements
- Collaborating with teams across AWS to integrate services
- Participating in on-call rotation to ensure service reliability

We maintain a regular on-call rotation but focus heavily on automation and proactive problem-solving to minimize disruptions. Our team members are located primarily in Seattle, with opportunities for remote work and collaboration across multiple AWS offices.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
- 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $151,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $261,500/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
