Enteral Feeding Program is a boutique program designed to meet the needs of our patients with any type of feeding tube. There are many opportunities to form close relationships with families, as we follow many of these patients for the entire time they have their tube in place. 

For nurses interested in honing their tactile skills, this is a great fit, as this role offers many opportunities to perform tube-related cares including, but not limited to primary G-tube changes, bridle placement, GJ to G-tube conversions, and more. 

A nurse acting in this role, will have the opportunity to rotate across the hospital and ambulatory setting, keeping the role interesting and engaging. 


Hours: Full Time, Salaried 40 hours
What you will do

The Enteral Feeding Program (EFP) Nurse functions with demonstrated expertise in the delivery of direct nursing care to children and their families in both the ambulatory and hospital departments. With advanced knowledge and skill, the EFP Nurse provides nursing care to children within a defined patient population of patients with durable or temporary enteral feeding devices, and nasal bridles. As a recognized resource for consultation, advocacy, education, and support, the EFP Nurse assists in maintaining a quality standard of nursing care for patients with enteral feeding devices and securement methods.

Responsibilities:

  • Contributes to the identification of nursing diagnosis, interventions, and expected outcomes specific to patients with enteral feeding devices. Assesses the response of patients with enteral feeding devices, interventions, or treatment modalities; makes decisions about procedural or equipment modifications; makes recommendations for changes in care or procedural changes; negotiates systems to implement change.

  • Identifies and supports the learning needs of patients/families with enteral feeding devices. This includes but is not limited to: patients considering placement of devices, patients with peristomal skin concerns that require advanced interventions and patients with complex teaching needs. Develops content for formal teaching for both orientation and staff development; communicates content for informal teaching; acts as a resource for patients/families, physicians, and staff.

  • Acts as consultant to staff and physicians; advocates for the enterally fed patient population; assists with the development of new and advanced skills that are required to support the procedures within the specialty; assists in coordination of delivery of care and/or discharge by enlisting other resources.

  • Provides and documents direct nursing care in the electronic health record.

  • Collaborates with inpatient case management in the discharge planning/home care coordination for patients/families with enteral feeding devices.

  • Applies current research findings in practice; participates in data collection; introduces current research into clinical practice and participates in quality initiatives pertinent to the practice of enteral feeding devices. Utilizes outcome data to enforce clinical decision making. 

  • Assists in setting expected standards of performance within specialty; contributes to the evaluation of orientation and on-going staff development needs; participates in orientation of staff of specialty; assists with analysis and implementation of systems to utilize available resources in an efficient, cost-effective manner.

  • Identifies specialty needs; contributes to and assists with the development of or expansion of programs within specialty.

Direct Patient Care Job:

  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.

What you will need:

A current license to practice professional nursing in the State of Wisconsin

Current CPR certification – Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers through American Heart or American Red Cross is required.

Education

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an ADN or a BSN in order to meet the recommended entry level for a professional nurse (or equivalent academic and/or professional experience).  A BSN is preferred.

Experience

Three years pediatric nursing experience, to develop a comprehensive understanding of patient care for patients with enteral feeding devices and other enteral feeding tubes and nasal bridles, and gain knowledge and skill in pediatric nursing procedures and standards.
