POSITION SUMMARY:
Nurse Navigator assists patients who many need further diagnostic mammography services. Our Breast Imaging nurse navigator is a registered nurse and certified breast patient navigator in imaging with knowledge and expertise in breast pathology. Following an initial mammogram, if a diagnostic mammogram is needed to further evaluate breast tissue or changes in the breast, she assists with:
Bridging the gap between mammograms, biopsies and breast cancer diagnosis
Coordinating appointments

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
- Providing guidance and support through the breast imaging process
- Facilitating communication to the physician and surgeon to quickly coordinate biopsy procedures
- Educating patients and the community about complete breast care

The Nurse Navigator acts as an advocate to assist patients in navigating throughout internal and external systems in order to facilitate the diagnosis and treatment process. - The registered nurse, adheres to the rules and regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
Essential Functions:
- Performs all nursing responsibilities and duties required by unit as specific to the scope of service. Implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice following department policies and procedures in accordance with accrediting bodies and/or manufacturer guidelines. Reviews cases with the radiologist/physician when appropriate.
- Completes initial assessment upon patient admission and develops appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards and that is based on patient and family needs. Implements plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. Modifies plan of care based upon continuous evaluation.
- Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team. Recognizes and responds to any adverse or allergic reactions including change is patient status requiring nursing assistance.
- Assists patients in understanding diagnosis, treatment options and resources available internal and external to the organization. Provides education and informational resources to patient to optimize continuous and comprehensive care. Serves as a liaison in planning care between patients, caregivers and multi-disciplinary health care providers.
- Serves as a technical resource and subject matter expert for staff, management, and physicians.
- Screens the patient for possibility of pregnancy and performs pregnancy testing if applicable.
- Responsible for maintaining equipment and workplace environment including maintaining supply inventories and orderliness of work area. Recognizes malfunctions and service needs and reports service needs in a timely manner.
- Ensures patient, visitor and environmental safety. Reports safety events immediately including those that are a near miss.
- Assists in instruction of students and new staff as necessary.
- Meets productivity levels as established by department benchmarking. Assists other areas during downtimes so to maintain productivity.
- Participates in QA/QC programs. Directs personnel in maintaining standards set out by accrediting bodies, licensees and safety guidelines.
- Aids in the annual review and periodic updates of department policies and protocols.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN)
CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Registered Nurse (RN) Massachusetts and Basic Life Support (BLS)
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Demonstrates clinical competencies in providing direct patient care and patient and family education as well as assisting the provider in the delivery of patient care. Demonstrates leadership and organizational skills with the ability to communicate effectively and collaboratively with others.
