BMH Chief Nursing Officer

Core Executive Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership and Planning:

  • Develops comprehensive short- and long-term goals and strategic plans for the nursing practice in collaboration with system COOs and facility CNOs.
  • Actively participates in setting organizational policies and is instrumental in strategic planning across the system, influencing both clinical and administrative operations.

Budget Management and Financial Oversight:

  • Develops, secures approval, and administers coordinated budgets for all areas of responsibility.

  • Guides subordinate managers in their budget preparations and financial management, emphasizing cost control and financial efficiency.
  • Regularly reviews financial reports, approves expenditures, and makes adjustments as necessary.

Policy Development and Implementation:

  • Formulates policy for the nursing division, ensuring all procedures are compliant with regulatory standards.
  • Provides the direction necessary to implement approved policies efficiently and effectively, delegating responsibilities where appropriate to ensure operational excellence.

Operational Oversight and Management Control:

  • Establishes robust management control procedures including records maintenance and authorization processes across nursing departments.
  • Regularly reviews operational reports and initiates corrective actions, ensuring that all practices meet the highest standards of care and efficiency.

Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance:

  • Ensures that all nursing practices comply with up-to-date rules, regulations, and standards set by various accrediting, regulatory, and governmental agencies.
  • Monitors adherence to these standards, proactively addressing any compliance issues and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Staff Management and Development:

  • Directs hiring, development, and evaluation of subordinate managerial personnel.
  • Provides leadership in staffing decisions, supports professional development, and when necessary, oversees disciplinary actions and terminations, fostering a supportive and high-performance culture.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Evidence-Based Practice:

  • Oversees the development and implementation of evidence-based nursing practice guidelines.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to advance technology in nursing practice.

Quality and Strategic Planning:

  • Implements and monitors nursing strategic and quality plans. Ensures performance standards are in alignment with professional practice standards.

Safety and Collaboration:

  • Ensures a safe environment for patients and providers. Participates in contract negotiations related to care delivery.

Leadership and Development:

  • Acts as a mentor and role model, recruiting and retaining future nurse leaders.
  • Emphasizes the importance of change and supports the credentialing and peer review processes.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree required; must be in Nursing. Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience and 8-10 years of management experience, demonstrating progressive leadership development.
  • Licensed RN in good standing with the state of Michigan.
  • Proficient in basic word processing and spreadsheet skills.
  • Requires high levels of diplomacy, strategic timing, and a developed sense of organizational strategy.
  • Work Environment: The role involves mental and visual fatigue typical of jobs with significant and frequent deadlines.
  • It includes regular use of technology and may involve walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and lifting light weight objects.
