Job Description
The Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing Sciences Group at NREL has an opening for a full-time graduate summer intern. Responsibilities for this internship will focus on systems biology analyses and bioreactor cultivations with bacteria to generate fundamental insights into the production of renewable fuels and chemicals from lignocellulosic feedstocks.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Analyzing proteomic datasets using python and/or R
- Conducting experiments in bioreactors
- Documenting results and contributing to a paper
- Collaborating with NREL Researchers as well as working independently

Basic Qualifications
Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications
- The successful candidate will have completed an undergraduate degree and will either be enrolled in or recently graduated from a master’s program, or currently enrolled in a PhD program, in cell and molecular biology, chemical and biological engineering, bioengineering, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience in coding languages including R and/or Python.
- Demonstrated experience in proteomic analyses
- Excellent organizational skills, including contemporary laboratory notebook documentation
- Proficient communication skills, including the ability to succinctly communicate scientific findings to peers
- Critical thinking skills, including the ability to formulate hypotheses and interpret results
- Ability to maintain a clean lab space with utmost attention to safety
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in microbiology including sterile techniques.
- Demonstrated experience with technical documentation and or contributing to journal papers

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $43,700 - $69,900NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
