Job Summary
Summary<br>The Nurse Educator (NE) participates in the overall planning, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive program for competency-based staff education, including department orientation, mandatory education programs, continuing education, and quality/performance improvement activities. The NE collaborates with the Nurse Manager/Director to implement unit-based orientation, educational programming and quality improvement initiatives. The NE works jointly with the nursing staff to determine educational and resource-related needs to advance nursing practice and support patient care and education.WORKING CONDITIONS: The work of the Nurse Educator is performed in both the in-patient and out-patient settings and may extend to the community. The NE works in environments where there may be exposure to communicable diseases, blood and bodily fluids and hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic agents, radio isotopes and radiation. Access to campus buildings involves exposure to varying weather conditions.
SPECIALTY PRACTICE REQUIREMENTS:
Med/Surge - Requires telemetry experience. Prefers ACLS and/or specialty certification.
ICU - Requires critical care experience and ACLS.
PACU - Requires critical care experience, ACLS, and PALS. Prefers ASPAN certification.
OR - Requires OR experience. Prefers AORN certification.
GI - Requires critical care experience and ACLS. Prefers CGRN certification.
ED - Recent clinical educator experience in an ED or ICU environment. Requires ACLS and PALS. Prefers CEN or CCRN.
Education Resources - Prefers Meditech Nursing, eMAR and CPOE experience, and Telemetry. ACLS training, ACLS and/or PALS Instructor eligible as needed.<br><br>Does this position require Patient Care?<br>No<br><br>Essential Functions<br>-Conducts formal and informal needs assessments. <br>
-Develops, implements and evaluates programs that focus on the knowledge, skills and behaviors needed to deliver evidence-based nursing practice and quality patient care. <br>
-Designs, implements and evaluates educational programs for ancillary staff. <br>
-Participates in planning, implementing and evaluating a department competency-based orientation program for all staff. <br>
-Trains staff on unit specific equipment, computer software applications, and other technology. <br>
-Maintains competence as expert user for department specific equipment, computer software applications and other technology. <br>
-Participates in the development, planning, implementation and evaluation of educational and clinical technologies. <br>
-Evaluates and participates in purchasing teaching materials/new technologies that optimize learning and clinical practice. <br>
-Ensures timely completion of all mandatory training for staff. <br>
-Develops and implements continuing education programs for registered nurses using the American Nurses Credentialing Center criteria. <br>
-Serves as an American Heart Association (AHA) CPR Instructor and provides training for all staff. <br>
-Collaborates with Nurse Manager/Director in planning, implementing and evaluating unit specific education programs and staff competencies. <br>

-Maintains a flexible schedule in order to meet the needs of staff on all shifts, including weekends. <br>

-Functions as the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) liaison and SANE Educator. <br>
-Department of Educational Resources Only: <br>
-Develops implements and evaluates centralized competency-based orientation programs for all levels of nursing staff and direct care clinical ancillary staff. <br>
-Provides educational consultation to departments throughout the organization. <br>
-Serves as educational liaison to assigned clinical and support departments. <br>
-Collaborates with Nurse Managers, Directors and unit-based Nurse Educators in planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs that promote professional development and leadership potential of nursing staff. <br>
-Participates in the hospital’s Service Academy. <br>
-Coordinates centralized CPR Training programs for the Division of Nursing and the clinical ancillary support departments. <br>
-Manages the continuing education provider unit program according to the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) criteria. <br>
-Coordinates school of nursing (SON) clinical placements and orientation. <br>
-Manages centralized SON clinical placement system. <br>
-Oversees and maintains the hospital’s computer-based learning system. <br>
-Manages projects and leads task forces as assigned. <br>
Qualifications
Education
Other Certificate/Diploma Nursing required or Bachelor's Degree Nursing preferred and Master's Degree Nursing preferred
