To coordinate and organize the evaluation and care of patients for possible transplants. To educate transplant recipients, their families, and potential donors regarding transplantation.

Education & Experience

BSN in Nursing plus two (2) years of related nursing experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:  Valid RN license

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of patient screening, charting, and medical history procedures and documentation.

    Responsibilities
    • Educates recipients, their families, and potential donors regarding all aspects of marrow transplantation, expected outcomes, complications, and patient responsibilities. Provides emotional support to family members.
    • Provides daily or weekly clinical assessment of the patient; monitors and enter lab data daily; communicates any significant changes to physician.
    • Reviews patient lab tests and patient monitoring records and assesses patient problems; provides and assists with medication administration.
    • Participates in hospital committees and staff meetings; participates in patient care conferences and continuing education to keep abreast of latest trends in transplantation; emphasizes compliance.
    • Communicates with primary referring physicians for updates, evaluations, and clinical care concerns; provides complete and accurate information at evaluation meetings.
    • Completes both pre-tx and post-tx chart documentation for internal and external forms (CIBMTR), including baseline, day 30, day 100, and yearly.
    • Facilitates insurance approval process with financial transplant coordinator.  Schedules and coordinates the testing required for transplant approval.
    • Works with social worker for assistance with indigent programs for patients without insurance coverage.

Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, frequent work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, constant sitting, occasional standing, and occasional walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
