Summary

Barry University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Nursing. Reporting to the Executive Dean of the College of Health Professions and Medical Sciences, the Dean is a member of the Provost’s Dean Council, a collaborative body of academic leaders committed to advancing the University’s vision of excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement.

Founded in 1940 by the Adrian Dominican Sisters, Barry University is a dynamic Catholic institution rooted in the liberal arts tradition and committed to the core values of knowledge and truth, inclusive community, social justice, and collaborative service. The Barry University School of Nursing has its origin in the Barry College Nursing Department, which was established in September 1953. The first class to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree was in 1957. The National League for Nursing team visited the college in 1961, and accreditation was granted to the Department of Nursing in 1962. Continuing accreditation has been granted since then. In 2002, the School of Nursing celebrated "50 Years of Excellence”. The degrees offered by the School of Nursing include Pre-nursing, traditional BSN, Accelerated BSN, Family Nurse Practitioner MSN, post-baccalaureate DNP, post-baccalaureate DNP with Specialization in Anesthesiology, and a PhD in Nursing. These programs are offered exclusively in person, online, or in a hybrid format. The College of Health Professions and Medical Sciences at Barry University responds to the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare through interdisciplinary and integrated educational experiences. The College includes the: - School of Nursing - School of Podiatric Medicine - School of Social Work and Mental Health - Department of Health Sciences and Clinical Practice - Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies - Academy of Emergency Management Services The College is also home to Barry Health Partners, a network of healthcare clinics and two podiatric residencies affiliated with regional healthcare systems. Additionally, the CARE Center (Counseling, Assessment, Research, and Education) offers services to underserved children and families, reinforcing Barry’s community-focused mission. Essential Functions

The Dean for the School of Nursing is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School. The Dean will oversee the strategic, operational, academic, and clinical direction of the School while reporting directly to the Executive Dean of the College of Health Professions and Medical Sciences. The Dean will provide strategic direction to advance nursing education, research, and practice while strengthening partnerships across the academic health sciences community and beyond. The Dean also serves as part of the Provost’s Dean Council.

The ideal candidate will bring an appreciation of and commitment to Barry University’s mission. In addition, the next Dean will be student-focused; have excellent interpersonal, communication, administrative, and organizational skills; and the ability to articulate a vision that encourages and inspires quality program growth. The Dean will foster scholarship and research along with partnerships with community partners.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide bold vision and leadership to strengthen existing programs, create new programs, and advance the school’s reputation

  • Grow graduate programs strategically with an emphasis on further bolstering the health studies areas

  • Develop the financial resources of the School, especially through fundraising and external donor relations

  • Oversight of curriculum development, accreditation, faculty recruitment and evaluation, student success initiatives, budget management, clinical program oversight, and strategic planning

  • Partnership with local hospitals and clinics to secure high-quality clinical rotations

  • Engagement with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and strategic partners to advance the mission and visibility of the School

  • Representing the School at national and international professional associations and conferences that align with the School’s, university’s mission and strategic goals

  • Responsible for ensuring all published policies and procedures are met

  • Fundraising and alumni relations to support scholarships, clinical programs, and faculty development

  • Advancement of research and scholarly activity in collaboration with other academic units and external partners

  • Engage and interact with students, faculty, staff, and other departments/schools/offices daily, assuring the highest level of satisfaction and efficiency while meeting outcomes and goals

  • Recruit, mentor, develop, and retain faculty who will further the School’s academic mission and attain high standards of excellence

  • Evaluate faculty for appointment and promotion.

The Dean must serve as a role model for professional excellence and compassion, demonstrating a deep commitment to student success, faculty engagement, and community service. Clinical time for private practice is open for discussion, though the role is considered full-time and should not compromise the Dean’s institutional responsibilities.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • A PhD or another Doctorate Degree in Nursing or related field.

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of clinical work.

  • Minimum of 5- 7 years of university-level teaching.

  • Minimum of 5 years of higher education administrative/ management experience with excellent proven results.

  • An excellent portfolio in advanced nursing research or a related field, a distinguished record of scholarly achievement, publications, and experience mentoring students and early career faculty.

  • Excellent understanding of curriculum development and assessment.

  • National, international professional recognition and eligibility for appointment at the rank of full professor.

  • Experience with academic leadership and a proven track record leading student success and research initiatives.

  • Documented leadership experience as an Associate Director or Assistant Director of a nursing program.

Preferred:

  • Involvement in national and international professional organizations.

  • Board certification in respective clinical field in nursing.

  • Experience with budget preparation and management

  • Gained familiarity with grant compliance and research administration

  • Fundraising and alumni engagement experience

  • Strategic planning and institutional assessment background

  • Understanding of CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) accreditation standards.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication, verbal and writing skills.

  • Understanding of faculty governance and university culture

  • Ability to build and maintain partnerships across the College, University, and healthcare communities

  • Availability to travel to represent the School of Nursing at meetings and affiliated sites that are mission-critical to the University’s mission

  • Deep understanding of healthcare ecosystems, including enrollment management and clinical research development.
