The Charge Nurse is a Registered Nurse with a strong knowledge base and clinical experience able to use dynamic leadership abilities to effectively coordinate and manage day to day operations. The charge nurse has the leadership capacity and knowledge base necessary to assure that all patients receive personalized and quality care.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current licensure by the State Board of Nursing of New Mexico or compact (multi-state) license
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • Advanced Certification Life Support (ACLS)
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivation and accountability
  • Team orientation
  • Completion of the Charge Nurse Course within 6 months of assuming a Charge Nurse role.
  • Completion of Death Pronouncement training within 6 months of assuming a Charge Nurse role as applicable to area of specialty.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least one (1) – two (2) years of progressive experience in area of specialty
  • BSN

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Leadership:

  • Acts as a clinical and supervisory resource
  • Analyzes and distributes fair patient assignments
  • Serves as team Leader, encouraging others throughout each shift in alignment with expectations and in support of SJRMC
  • Serves as supportive liaison to other teams and departments as needed
  • Ensures smooth transition from shift to shift

  • Rounds on patients and staff
  • Coaches team members to promote and develop skills and behaviors necessary to execute department strategy and hospital strategic goals

Physical Demands and Environmental Work Conditions:

  • Must be able to see with corrective eyewear and hear clearly with assistance.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist frequently.
  • Must be able to lift greater than fifty (50) pounds and push up to three hundred (300) pounds frequently.
  • Potential exposure to blood and bodily fluids and meets OSHA training requirements.

Special Demands:

  • Sets limits when dealing with angry, hostile, or sometimes verbally or physically abusive patients and  families in an attempt to ensure a safe, respectful environment that will support the delivery of care.
  • Effectively copes and strives for balance when caring for acutely ill patients and families.
