About This Opportunity
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to oversee and guide the Veterinary Nurses/Technicians at UQ Gatton across the Small Animal, Equine Specialist, and Production Animal Hospitals/Services. This pivotal role is responsible for providing both short- and long-term planning, leadership, and coordination of technical operations, while driving the standardisation of practices across all Veterinary Teaching Hospitals (VTH).
Key responsibilities will include:
Lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of nursing services across Small Animal, Equine Specialist, and Production Animal Hospitals at UQ Gatton, ensuring alignment with broader Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) standards.
Ensure high-quality nursing support for clinicians, students, and hospital services, fostering a positive and practical learning environment for veterinary and veterinary technology students.
Champion the professional development of veterinary nurses through mentoring, structured training, and support of the nurse career pathway.
Oversee recruitment, induction, scheduling, and performance management of nursing staff, building a cohesive, high-performing team.
Manage daily clinical operations and long-term planning to ensure efficient service delivery across hospitals, with optimal use of staff and resources.
Maintain the paraprofessional budget, achieve financial goals, and ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures, WHS, and relevant regulatory requirements.
Develop and refine nursing guidelines, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and support innovation in clinical techniques and workflows.
Engage with veterinarians, academic staff, and multidisciplinary teams to support cultural change, process improvements, and a unified hospital approach.
Actively contribute to clinical teaching and supervision, while maintaining personal professional development through education, networks, and industry participation.

UQ VETS Small Animal Hospital boasts the latest in veterinary medical and surgical diagnostic and treatment options for small animals, birds, exotic pets and wildlife, as well as a 7-day urgent and emergency Care service. The UQ VETS Clinical Studies Centre facilitates and provides support to pre-clinical and clinical training in companion animals as well as a renowned research hub for clinical and behavioural research. The Centre includes a 16 – table surgical teaching facility and is also used for veterinary continuing education events. The Clinical Studies Centre is also home to the School’s Pets-for-Life Adoption Program. UQ staff also supervise clinical placements at the RSPCA’s Brisbane Animal Care Campus, Wacol.

About You
Bachelor of Veterinary Technology and/or Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing degree or equivalent with a minimum of at least 4 years subsequent relevant experience;
Extensive, demonstrable and relevant management expertise and experience in a leadership/ supervisory position in an industry related position.
Extensive knowledge and understanding of veterinary teaching hospitals or similar industry related processes and an in depth knowledge of veterinary discipline processes.
Demonstrated ability to train and mentor staff and students in delivering and maintaining high standards of professional veterinary nursing in all areas of nursing.
High level organisational skills.
Demonstrated ability to work flexibly with the use of initiative and autonomy.
High level written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to use these skills in managing professional & operational relationships with external stakeholders, colleagues, clients and students.
Knowledge of ethical requirements, principles and practices relevant to all areas of veterinary nursing.
Knowledge and application of relevant policies and procedures applicable to employment, including workplace health and safety, employment equity and anti-discrimination.
Enthusiasm, initiative and self-motivation.
Demonstrated commitment to high level and ongoing professional development and excellence in the field of veterinary nursing.
A passion for the clinical teaching of veterinary and veterinary technology professionals in training.
Willingness to participate in other professional service activities e.g. VNCA, community organisations, RSPCA, PetPEP (AVA).
Possess or be able to apply for a radiation license.
