Why this role is important?

As a member of the Shoppers Drug Mart Specialty Health Network (SHN) team, the Specialty Care Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) supports our specialty drug services, patient compliance and retention programs for a variety of medical therapies.  These services will be provided in our Specialty Care Centers (SCC) located in Calgary, AB. The Specialty Care LPN delivers nursing services such as subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, patient education, and support for specialty medications, under the guidance of physicians, in accordance with provincial regulations.

Nature and Scope

The LPN will work collaboratively within the healthcare team to support patient care in compliance with provincial LPN scope of practice, Health Canada guidelines, and SHN’s Standard Operating Procedures. The LPN will contribute to a high-quality, patient-centered experience through the delivery of delegated clinical tasks and coordinated patient support.

What you will do:

  • Provide patient centric services including administration of subcutaneous and intramuscular injections as permitted by provincial LPN scope
  • Support infusion therapy services as appropriate and under direction/supervision (where permitted)
  • Manage and triage incoming patient phone calls related to medication administration, side effects, and disease state concerns; provide appropriate education within scope and escalate to the physician when clinical assessment or intervention is required.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on medication administration and treatment plans To ensure effective communication between all healthcare teams, including nursing, pharmacy and medical staff, when dealing with a patient
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation in patient charts and electronic systems Assist on-site physician with the completion of patient enrollment forms, prescription forms and order sets, as well as reimbursement documentation
  • Demonstrate commitment to Continuous Quality Improvement by completing mandatory drug therapy training, adverse event training and review of new and annual Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Required Organizational Procedures (ROP) as outlined by Specialty Health Network
  • Responsible for the collection and reporting of adverse events, product complaints, and product replacements based on the Ministry of Health criteria to meet Health Canada’s Guidelines for each drug program
  • Maintain patient and SHN business confidentiality at all times as per privacy legislation and related SOP’s
  • Maintains high standards of professional practice by adhering to the ethics of the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta and stay abreast of the latest professional advances.
  • Participates in administrative meetings and continuous learning opportunities, as required
  • Perform duties and tasks as required

What you will need:

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with unrestricted professional license within the province of work
  • Minimum 3  years clinical experience; community or ambulatory care experience is an asset
  • Rheumatology, autoimmune, or specialty medication experience is an asset
  • Strong patient assessment and observational skills within LPN scope
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of Shoppers Drug Mart Specialty Health Network policies and procedures
  • Commitment to the practice of quality nursing service delivery
  • Knowledge of privacy legislation and patient care documentation
  • Knowledgeable of various communication methods to meet the needs of patients
  • IV skills or willingness to complete additional infusion training (as permitted by provincial regulation)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Current CPR certificate and yearly recertification
  • Strong computer and documentation skills are required
  • Ability to work independently and team environment
