Job Description

The Bioeconomy and Sustainable Transportation (BEST) directorate within the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) performs a full range of research from exploring biomass at the molecular level through biorefinery process optimization to bring biofuels and bio-products to market. The directorate’s research encompasses multiple areas including analysis & characterization, biochemical processes, downstream processing, bioenergetics, and thermochemical processes. 

 

Our research group is focused on developing biofuels and value-added coproducts (polymer, surfactant, graphite, etc.) from algal biomass. Our team brings together a wide range of technical expertise and global experience unified by a passionate drive to increase the technoeconomic feasibility and global adoption of biorefineries. Interdisciplinary collaboration and a relentless pursuit of advancing understanding at the intersection of fundamental science and industrial application is paramount to every member of our team.

The BEST Directorate is seeking a full-time post-undergraduate year-round intern to provide researchers within our group with the support necessary to achieve their cutting-edge research safely. The successful candidate will perform hands-on tasks and experimentation in a laboratory setting including the following: 

 

  • Batch and flow reactor operation for algae pretreatment, conversion, biofuel production and polymer synthesis 

  • Develop renewable polyurethane materials for a broad range of applications. 

  • Benchtop wet chemistry, including sample preparation and derivatization, 

  • Operation and maintenance of analytical instrumentation, (e.g. FTIR, NMR, TGA, DSC, GC-MS, etc.) 

 

  • Separations, including solid-liquid separations and solid-liquid extractions. 

  • Bioprocessing scale-up 

 

This is an excellent opportunity for a student invested in the NREL mission who desires relevant laboratory experience in preparation for graduate school or a career in biofuels or chemical industries.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.


Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • The ability to conduct laboratory experiments and follow written procedures, with minimal supervision and with the utmost regard to safety is required. 

  • Self-motivation, adaptability and an aptitude for learning are critical for this role 

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program; or recently graduated from an undergraduate or master’s degree in a Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biological Systems Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, or related discipline 

  • Prior hands-on experience in a wet chemistry lab (team will train on specialized equipment) 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in presenting PowerPoint 

  • Demonstrated experience with technical documentation/report writing 

  • Demonstrated knowledge/experience in programming with common languages such as python/R etc. for the purpose of processing large data sets

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $39,200 - $62,700
