About St Vincents Private Melbourne:
Our experienced team of clinical professionals, care givers and support staff are equipped to provide the highest level of therapeutic, medical and surgical services. We work together to ensure patient safety, well-being and recovery. We are a not-for-profit Catholic private hospital which operates across four sites at Fitzroy, East Melbourne, Kew and Werribee.

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Associate Nurse Unit Manager to join our fantastic leadership team. Our General Surgical and Medical Ward consists of 32 beds, including 4 dedicated cardiac beds. We oversee a diverse range of post-operative patients, including those recovering from general surgery, orthopedics, urology, neurology, plastic surgery and ENT. We also provide specialised care for pediatric patients as young as 2 years old. Additionally, we manage elective medical admissions.

  • Fixed Term - Part Time Position 0.8 EFT for 12 months available to cover maternity cover.

  • Part Time Position for 0.6 EFT available.


The ward operates on a rotating roster, requiring all staff to work morning (AM), afternoon (PM), and night (ND) shifts

 

About the Role
As the Associate Nurse Unit Manager, you are under delegation from the Nurse Unit Manager (NUM), will provide operational, clinical and professional leadership to staff, ensuring practice is aligned with the St Vincent's Health Australia mission and values and the Nurse and Midwifery Board of Australia standards. During shift, the ANUM is responsible for the delivery of comprehensive, safe and evidence-based nursing practice that support person-centred outcomes for patients and the well-being of staff.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide operational leadership and clinical guidance to nursing staff, promoting high standards of care and professional conduct. Ensure adequate staffing levels and efficient allocation of resources during shifts.

  • Oversee the delivery of patient care, ensuring all clinical practices are in line with current evidence-based standards and meet the specific needs of patients across surgical and medical disciplines.

  • Mentor and support the ongoing professional development of nursing staff through education, training, and performance reviews.

  • Ensure that patient care complies with safety and quality standards. Participate in regular audits, review clinical incidents, and support improvements in clinical practice and care delivery.

  • Actively manage delegated portfolios from the NUM, including staffing, resource management, and supporting the NUM in operational and budgetary functions.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing quality improvement initiatives, identifying areas for service improvement and participating in organizational change initiatives.

  • Monitor and assess clinical risk, ensuring safe and effective care. Contribute to incident reporting and root cause analysis, with a focus on preventive strategies.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse.

  • Previous experience in caring for surgical and medical patients, particularly in the orthopedic, urology, neurology, plastic surgery, ENT, and general surgery fields, as well as pediatric nursing.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to educate patients and work collaboratively with the healthcare team.

  • ALS (Advanced Life Support) and BLS (Basic Life Support) certifications are desired.

  • Strong leadership skills with experience in managing teams in a fast-paced clinical environment.

  • A passion for patient safety and quality improvement.
