Purpose
Participates in greenhouse operations including propagation, finishing, and general care of plants. Tasks include propagation, weeding, grooming, transplanting, monitoring and treating for pests and disease, seed collecting and cleaning, and moving, labeling and organizing stock. Participates in minor infrastructure maintenance such as irrigation system repairs and simple tool care.
Assists with the set-up, maintenance, restocking and watering of the plant sale space and plant inventory. Works with and supervises nursery volunteers. Candidate should be eager to follow the direction of our Horticulture staff, have good customer service skills, and enjoy working outside.
Responsibilities
Propagates, monitors, cares for and finishes Texas native plant stock using methods such as seeding, cutting, layering, division, transplanting, watering, weeding, grooming, fertilizing, and Integrated Plant Management. Collects, cleans, organizes, and stores seed.
Assist with plant sales including receiving plant deliveries, sale set-up, inventory restocking and organization, watering, breakdown and running of plant sales.
Oversees and works along regular volunteers, community service volunteers, and other volunteer groups.
Responsible for efficient use, minor repairs, and on-going maintenance of greenhouse and exterior growing facilities. Maintains general care and cleaning of work areas, tools and equipment. Safely operates small engine equipment, golf carts, trimmer, blower, and large motorized equipment such as a truck. Other tasks include mixing soil, hauling trash and compost, weeding surrounding grounds of the growing area. Complies with all safety policies, practices, and procedures. Reports all unsafe activities to supervisor.
Performs minimal administration duties such as record keeping, labeling and data collection.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Texas Class C driver’s license.
Experience in the use of hand and power tools applicable to the trade.
At least 2 years of experience with propagation, finishing and care of a variety of containerized plants.
Thorough attention to safety required.
Must have manual dexterity, be able to lift 30 pounds, and have stamina to carry plants short distances throughout shift.
Good customer service and communication skills, ability to function in a team, and ability to follow directions.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
First Aid/CPR training
Experience working with volunteers
Retail experience
Knowledge of Texas native plants
Spanish language skills
Experience in a botanical garden setting
Driving Required
This job requires a class “C” operator’s driver’s license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
Salary Range
$40,000 + depending on qualifications
Working Conditions
Must be able and willing to work outside in all types of weather, including extreme cold, heat and rain.
May be exposed to hazardous wildlife, dust, fumes, smoke, and loud noises.
Crouching, kneeling, twisting, and carrying items on uneven ground will be required.
Work Shift
Tuesday – Saturday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; varies during Plant Sales.
Occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required for mission-related events.
