Health System Shared Services | MIM Operations-JMMedical Information Management
The Medical Information Management (MIM) Department at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center plays a crucial role in maintaining, securing, and ensuring the integrity of patient information. Their responsibilities encompass supporting patient care, education, research, health system operations, connect site affiliates and administrative needs. By effectively managing medical record data and information resources, they ensure that accurate and confidential patient information is readily available for making informed medical decisions. The department adheres to hospital policies, procedures, bylaws, and third-party regulatory requirements, upholding high standards for medical record-keeping.
Master Patient Index
The Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) team plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of electronic medical records. Their responsibilities include identifying, investigating, and merging duplicate medical record numbers (MRNs) within the system. By understanding how identity events impact the merging process, they contribute to patient safety, quality of care, privacy, and overall patient satisfaction.
This skilled team reviews audit trails, revises the EMPI, handles deceased patient records, manages referring provider mail communication through IHIS (Integrated Healthcare Integration System), and utilizes the potential duplicate weighting system in IHIS. They are vigilant in recognizing instances where a patient’s record has been overwritten, promptly reporting potential identity theft cases, and addressing patients documented erroneously. Their expertise ensures that patient data remains accurate and secure, supporting optimal healthcare outcomes.
Scope of Position
A Medical Information Management Student Intern serves in a variety of functional areas within the department in addition to assisting with special projects as assigned by the respective manager.
Minimum Qualifications
For Hire: Students enrolled in OSU programs designed to achieve a Bachelor degree in Health Information Systems. Other OSU students will be considered.
For Business Manager, students enrolled in OSU programs designed to achieve a Bachelor’s degree within the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.
